Wimbledon R4 : Murray vs Gasquet

Quote

Andy Murray takes on Richard Gasquet in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2008.

Murray in 4 but it could easily be in 5.

Wow what a tough match!

Neither player has won as big a match as this since.... dare I say since Gasquet beat Murray in Paris last year in the battle to make Shanghai!

Murray does have the edge in overall form but both players have played at a very similar level so far this Wimbledon. However, Gasquet is ahead in experience of winning this type of match, including against Murray as mentioned.

In terms of who is more talented - that debate is probably as fierce and fascintating as the match should be and I honestly cant pick a winner.

What is for sure, is that we have again arrived at a career defining moment for Murray.

This is a 50-50. If one of them has a bad day or a good day it will be decisive.

It will also be significant in showing if Andy can now manage to break the hoodoo that prevents him from beating his contemporaries.  Here's hoping.

Good point.

I've given up predicting. Smile If his form stays as it has been he should win, but I dont want to jinx anything. nervous

Yup, he really does seem to have a problem with that.

Does anyone remember from the last time they completed all 3rd round matches by Saturday if they then played all men's 4th round matches on Monday? I just thought they'd split it between Monday and Tuesday.

Well I am rather worried about this match....really could go either way.

But I feel with the home crowd behind him, Andy can pull it out in 4.

No prediction from me either - it's too risky. I remember that last game with Gasquet but things have changed since then even though it was just a few months ago. I'd love him to win and will be watching with baited breath. He's played well so far but I feel his match against Haas showed some inconsistency in the second set when he seemed to be unable to keep up his first serves in percentage. Good luck to him and let's hope his problems with beating his contemporaries are over.

I really hope Hewitt will give Federer a decent challenge as I won't be home until 6PM... maybe I'll just miss a set search me

McEnroe predicts Murray in 5 for this match, btw.

Good piece in the Observer today saying Dicky was LESS than convincing against Simon (who's pish on grass). Apparently Dicky was trying to serve and volley ( roflmao ) and hardly used the backhand.
(Goes to find linky....)

You could easily have written a VERY similar article the other way around:

"Andy Murray, the brilliant yet erratic Scotsman (could be) known as the Microwave because of an ability to suddenly produce a hot streak, stands between Richard Gasquet and a place in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

Gasquet meets the eleventh seed on Centre Court tomorrow. Gasquet reached the semi-finals here last year, and has a 2-0 record in head-to-heads, so will fancy his chances. Murray was not impressive in defeating German veteran Tommy Haas - who had never been beyond the fourth round and has just come back from long term injuries - 6-4 6-7 6-3 6-2 on Centre Court.

Murray, from Dunblane in Scotland, is only 21 but seems to have been around a long time. He has promised much throughout his career but has too often faltered. Yesterday he gave a typically inventive but patchy display.

Against Haas, he dropped the second set, when it appeared easier to be win it. Murray failed to win the match in straight sets and his main failing was a faltering serve."

etc

Okay it may not be quite as applicable to Murrays' current form compared to Gasquet - but we're talking a 2% difference in just 1 match. There's so little to choose between them in terms of form, talent, style and their overall careers...

Although Im boring enough to despise 'gut feelings'*I am agreeing with Mark's - who reckons Murray could just find his way to the final!  pray

*At worst I believe gut feelings are just someone's brain analysing all the variables of a situation in a sort of subconcious way Razz
