http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-1303205/Andy-Murray-blitzes-Rafa-Nadal-straight-sets-reach-Rogers-Cup-final.html

Andy Murray has always been an independent type and the style he showed in beating world No1 Rafael Nadal last night suggested he is revelling in his new-found solo role.

It is the second final he has reached since taking charge of his own tuition, and if this 6-3, 6-4 victory is any indication of things to come, the search for a new coach will be left on the back burner.

'I played really well and didn't make too many errors. I dictated from the back of the court and, with each match, I am starting to play better and better.'

Murray has accepted the responsibility of his situation and found a more aggressive approach than the sometimes attritional one he is so expert at.

Against Nalbandian that meant going for his shots and his backhand again looked in good shape against Nadal.

Murray has the support of his mother, the former LTA coach of the year Judy, and may well be taking advantage of her scouting and opponent- analysis skills.

"He defends very well, moves well and he's got a forehand that, when he's allowed to dictate play, is very, very tough to play against because you end up doing a lot of running. So, yeah, I'll have to play pretty aggressive and serve well."

It was a reminder that Nadal the night before had surprisingly revealed why he felt he could not adapt to hard courts the way he has so superbly in the last three years on grass.

"Well, is easy for me to return inside [the court] on grass than hard, because the bounce stays a little bit lower, and on grass mistakes are part of the game," he said.

"Here, if you lose the court, and you go three metres behind, you have to play a very good shot to recover. If not, they have the control of the point and is almost impossible to come back into the point, no?"

Well yes, and Murray often did force him back. It was very effective, and it augurs well for New York in just over a fortnight's time.

"The more aggressive hitting that characterised wins over Nadal and David Nalbandian earlier in the week again played a crucial part as he kept Federer on the move and off balance for much of the final."  Why oh why has Andy left it so long before starting to play more aggressively again?

Like Nadal's comments - remarkably honest with no excuses, as usual.

"Winning a tournament is always great, but it's the first time I beat Roger and Rafa in the same tournament, which is probably the most pleasing thing, and then didn't drop a set against either of them," he said. "So it's good for the confidence for the next few weeks."

.................

"Just felt pretty calm on the court all week, and that's if you can put sort of the emotions and how you're feeling into I guess the way you're playing rather than sort of showing it after every point, sort of saving up and putting into the points and the rallies," said Murray. "I felt like it worked well. It was one of the best weeks I've had.  It was just kind of expressing myself with the way I was playing. I played pretty free flowing tennis and didn't get too nervous."

Seems Andy has finally learnt that if he can get on top of his emotions and channel his feelings into his shots it will enable him to play better.

"Andy managed to pull off the win - first time he’s beaten Fed in a final. Once he had done all his media commitments and showered, biked etc we all met up in the restaurant where a table had been reserved for us with champagne to celebrate. The catering manager even went off to the Emirates hospitality suite to get Andy some sushi as it wasn’t on the menu in the player area. The hospitality in Toronto Masters is second to none. Outstanding.

It was nice to be able to celebrate a bit. So often after a big win, players just have to bomb to the airport to catch a flight to the next event! "

"Or it was till we got stopped at US Border Control and discovered that I didn’t have a visa for the States as I’d flown direct to Toronto. The others had all gone from LA. So we had to go and sort that out while the van got searched by a couple of burly bald guys. The only thing that intrigued them was the number of tennis rackets they found in the trunk!

$6 and a couple of fingerprints later, we were on our way again, Jez snoozing on the floor and Andy playing Angry Birds on the ipad. "

"When we left Toronto around 9.30pm there was torrential rain and thunder and lightning. Played scrabble on the ipad (Andy’s new toy - the quarter-finalists at the tournament were each given one), listened to music, read my book and bantered with the team. Good fun. "

Guess you'll need to get to the QFs of a Masters to get a freebie. Smile

Very glad to hear this, having read two rather sour articles about Andy in the Canadian press.
