There's a point I keep thinking about. I think it might have changed things radically in Murray's mind. At 6-6 in the final set tiebreak against Nadal at the O2, Andy went for a massive cross-court backhand. The point is mysteriously erased from the YouTube video of the match.
He misses by about an inch. My theory is that it was Andy's stab at greatness, at elevating himself to the impenetrable status of Nadal, at least in his own mind. Because he missed by an inch, he seemed to prove to himself that he's merely mortal. We all know that Rafa would have made that shot.
I dont remember the point itself but I can probably remember my anguished reaction to it, and others, during that tie break.
I certainly feel that the fact he lost that match despite playing some of the best and gutsiest tennis he's ever played has had a subtle but sizable affect on his belief. From what was a great performance that he should really take a heck of a lot from, a bad seed was planted.
From my painful experience, Scottish (and it may not just be Scottish but it sure as hell seems like it sometimes) sportspeople seem to stumble into a position of incredible repetition - whereby performing heroically and failing to get the ultimate result. The last centimere before victory is exponentially the hardest to cover, and much sooner rather than later Murray is going to have to overcome it while toe to toe with the top 3 in the big situations. You've captured it beautifully with reference to that point, as it will trully come down to a shot just like that. I think we all felt the Australian Open final turned fatally on that netted cross court forehand to bring up Djokovic set point in the first set. Its a shot i've seen him make emphatically so often in the past too - for some reason im able to picture dozens of examples against Roddick in particular.
Mark my words, I just think he'll do something special at Wimbledon while expectations of him hit an all time low. There might be some good odds to be had if he has a slow first half of the year

Andy can still be a sponsorship winner...
Wow!
RBS banking on the Andy Murray factor to front major tennis initiative
[Mail, 4 Feb]
Andy Murray will be the focus of the next big sports sponsorship involving the Royal Bank of Scotland, the title backers of rugby's Six Nations championship.
RBS sponsorship deals are subject to fierce scrutiny after taxpayers rescued the bank that suffered the biggest loss in British corporate history in 2008.
Their shirt patch deal with Murray expired last year and the Scot had no logos on his clothing, apart from kit suppliers adidas, on his way to the final of the Australian Open.
However, talks are at an advanced stage about RBS regaining one of the two available spaces on his shirt as part of a much wider endorsement that will see Murray front a major community tennis initiative.

A terrible pice of journalism (can one call it journalism?) from Wilander. He is the most bias commentator I've ever heard, having absolutely no objectivity at all. He doesnt like Andy, we know, but for gods sake why bring his mother into it. Stupid to say it's her method of childrearing.
If Wilander had ever brought up children himself, he would know that peers are more influence than parents, especially in the teenage years!
I will say this though, his swearing should be minimised. It's not good Role Model behaviour and it doesnt enhance the spectators experience of the match. He is an ambassador for the sport and it's not professional to be "effing and jeffing" continually.
Unfortunately, Mats W. has renewed his Eurosport contract for 5 years, so we will be made to suffer longer. No doubt alonside Annabelle Croft who hangs onto his every word, never expressing her own point of view! The Croft-Wilander Mutual Admiration Society.

Got about a third of the way through Wilanders' article before my eyes glazed over. Thank goodness I'm about to get Sky so I won't have to listen to the Wilander/Croft drivel I've read so much about on these pages. I do agree about Andy's on-court language though. It could with toning down a little, even if he is swearing at himself and not anyone else.
Well done to Ms Widdicombe. "Andy has got further than many British tennis players and everyone should be grateful for what he has achieved - not resentful for what he hasn't."

I just love Ann Widdecombe! As well as being an honest to goodness down to earth person, she's kind and 'very brave' too.

I'm not disrespecting anyone's opinion here, but, I don't know why people are making so much of the swearing. I myself dislike people using bad language all the time, but, it can actually be a useful tool to stop someone from 'blowing a fuse', when very angry or frustrated. It's Andy's way of 'venting'. I don't think I've ever heard him swear 'off court'. Worse things happen in sporting arenas up and down the country every weekend. At least he isn't smashing his elbow into someones face or trying to deliberately break his opponents leg as is common in.....what's it called? Oh yes........the beautiful game!

I agree with what other forum members say. Mats Wilander is a twat he is also very biased. I have said
before that he should build a shrine and worship Federer. He can't see beyond the end of his nose.
God help us with people like him who have nothing good to say about Andy. He has his faults but to critisize
Judy Murray is beyond the pale. He should keep his opinions about the way people bring up their children
TO HIMSELF. What does he know about it.?

Is there a Mats Wilander Forum perhaps? If so, the entire MW Forum should write to him and give him what for!!!

Yes there is a site on eurosport. If you want to complain send them an email.
I sent one about an hour ago. He has no right to carry on like that.
If I was Judy Murray I would give him a right bollocking.

You are absolutely right .... i 'm french and i can tell you that the french press is more than fine with matches losses with our tennismen or women .... they don't put pressure on them like Andy got on his shoulders , even when Mauresmo was at her top , we didn't read about her every single day ...
