Olympic Medal Match: Murray v Federer

Quote

That was incredible, he absolutely smashed him. Lets hope this has destroyed that mental block and opened the door to him winning slams now. He really needed that, a big win over Federer when it really mattered. Third time in my life I can recall crying tears of joy - weirdly the previous time was when he won the Wimbledon semi final as I didn't think I'd get to see a British Wimbledon finalist in my lifetime. To win this at Wimbledon almost feels like winning Wimbledon itself. Pity they couldn't have won the mixed doubles too.

has anyone gone to youtube and looked for Andy/Olympics videos??  I have and one said click here for Andy Murray and it brought up Usan Bolt and the other brought up soccer.  Very maddening.

Andy Murray hug boy Henry Caplan, 11, 'overwhelmed'Continue reading the main story

Murray wins Olympic tennis gold
The young boy who stole a hug from Andy Murray moments after his Olympic victory has described being "overwhelmed with emotion" at his victory.

Eleven-year-old Henry Caplan was sitting with his father Elliot, who lives near Chelmsford, when Murray won.

Describing the moment, Henry said: "As soon as Andy Murray won I was crying with joy.

"I was hugging my dad and the next moment I was gone."

As Murray claimed victory in Sunday's final, Henry turned to give his father a hug.

But then he told his father he "had to go" and ran across the stand and into the box used by Roger Federer's family.

"I was down near the royal box area in front of Roger Federer's family and then I hugged Andy Murray.

"I just thought I had to be there."

He said Murray told him "anything for my fans" as they embraced.

His father said: "He's amazing. He was so overwhelmed with emotion.

"I was hugging him when he said 'let me go', I didn't know what was going on.

"Then the lady next to me said 'your son is on television' and I looked up and there he was.

"He should not have left my side of course," said Mr Caplin. "But I'm so proud of him - just to go and give Andy Murray a hug rather than anything else."

Henry, who is due to start at Parmiter's School in Hertfordshire after the summer holidays, was also watching the game with his brothers Jeremy, 19, and Alex, nine.

Mr Caplan said Henry's stepmother, who is seven and a half months' pregnant, was on a spa weekend at the time.

Henry, he said, is now hoping they will name the baby Andy in honour of the new Olympic champion.

There has been much talk of whether or not tennis should be an Olympic sport. Not only tennis in that case, see this from a Norwegian newspaper. Look whos top and way in front!

Here are the Olympic Games top 10 earns for the last year:
1. Roger Federer ($54, 3 million), tennis
2. LeBron James ($53 million), basketball
3. Kobe Bryant ($52.3 million), basketball
4. Maria Sharapova ($27.1 million), tennis
5. Kevin Durant ($25.5 million), basketball
6. Carmelo Anthony ($22.9 million), basketball
7. Usain Bolt ($20.3 million), sprinter
8. Novak Djokovic ($19.8 million), tennis
9. Chris Paul ($19.2 million), basketball
10. Li Na ($18.4 million), tennis

Does anyone know what Federer's worth in total? He must be mind-blowingly rich, most of it from sponsorship too.

I would estimate around $300m. Tiger Woods still the daddy in terms of wealth.

I hope the baby is not a girl! Andy might be a proble. Maybe Judy or Kim then? Ha ha

I hope Andy realises how many lives he's touched, even despite not winning that elusive slam yet. Greatest tennis player this island has ever had (at least in the last 70-80 years) and many of us will ever see.

welcome hugoagogo.  Well smugfed is good at snatching victory out of the jaws of defeat and he had to save face by looking pleased but you can be sure he was sick as a dog at not winning gold.  The very fact he's even talking about rio shows how much he wants it.  And as I've said elsewhere typical of the man that he managed to do the victory circuit with the look of a man who'd won gold while Andy looked genuinely humble.
It makes Andy's victory all the more pleasing that he stood in smugfed's way and also that the latter is now having to show him some respect finally.

Absolutely. Its been a pleasure, in retrospect, going through the highs & the lows watching Andy on the tour, year in year out and there is still quite a few years of this to come. What a high Sunday was, i was blubbin like a big Jessie!!
