So sad for Andy he definitely had his chance had he held serve. It must be his nerves taking over when he has to serve for the match.

Probably his worst choke ever. Painful to watch. He’s going the way of Federer; he’s going to be remembered for these terrible losses at the end of his career rather than the great player he was. I personally wish he would retire now before he does his legacy any more damage.

A counter puncher like Andy always fights back.

I had to leave the match after Andy had broken back in the first set, which he eventually lost by the finest of margins. Then he took the match into a decider. As I only sporadically followed the live scores, I did not know how the set unfolded. From your comments I conclude he served for the match, yet could not make it - again. And then things went against him. Very disappointing.
Though I did not watch the match, I would like to say something positive: Andy must have played quite well as he came close to winning. DeM is No 13 in the ranking, he is playing the best year of his career, he demolished Andy earlier in the year. It is very unfortunate that Andy keeps running into him.
In this shape he is definitely a contender and very much needed in the GB team.

I totally agree—the loss was clearly a case of nerves. Playing three incredibly tight sets against a top 15 player is not "damaging his legacy". It's rotten for him, because he knows he should have won, but if anyone thinks he's going to be remembered only for "these terrible losses at the end of his career"... Not to mention suggesting that this is "going the way of Federer"!! And what way would that be? Being one of the four or five greatest male tennis players of the last twenty years?

One thing is that they'll really need Andy for the Davis Cup in Malaga because Dan Evans has been forced to pull out with a leg injury, and Andy is a very good doubles player too.

From Andy -
"I'm not really enjoying it just now in terms of how I feel on the court and how I'm playing, The last five, six months haven't been that enjoyable, so I need to try and find some of that enjoyment back because playing a match like that there's not much positivity there.
When I play a good point, I'm not really getting behind myself and then in the important moments, that will to win and fight that has always been quite a big, big part of my game.
It's not just going to be like one or two weeks of training to get me to where I need to get to, it's going to have to be a lot of work and consistent work to give myself a chance,"

Oh dear Andy just does not seem to have the confidence to close out a match recently. I watched this match and thought he played well until the last set, when it was 5-2 on the board I thought this is it he is going to win, and then it just all went tits up. I'm sure he is feeling really annoyed with himself knowing Andy.

There are a lot of newspapers quoting Andy as saying he’s not enjoying tennis . After having such an incredible career the frustration of all these losses is clearly hard to take. Especially as he has worked so hard to come this far after his surgery and other injuries.

It's interesting that he says he's losing the will to win and fight when it comes to the important points, something which I think explains his difficulty in closing matches out - he also failed to close the first set out here despite having three SPs - and against the top players this is something he won't get away with.

Apologies Aileen. I just noticed you had already written a similar post about Andy not enjoying his tennis. I’ve said before when it’s endless hours of hard work without the results he expects of himself, I wonder how long Andy will continue.

No problems wb. I too wonder how much longer Andy can continue, and he's doing himself no favours with his constant racket smashing, something he very rarely, if ever, did, because that's getting him negative press as well as making his matches not a pleasure to watch. He says he doesn't want to retire just yet, so the only option might be for him to see a sports psychologist, only he's said in the past he doesn't have much faith in them. It might sound a bit strange, but rather than doing a training block in the off-season and continuing to push himself, he might actually benefit from having a few weeks completely away from the sport because the problem lies in his head, not his game.

Not getting over the line against the same player is more than frustrating and must make Andy doubt all the efforts he has put in. On the other hand, he has proved he may belong into the top 30, which is a success after all he has gone through.
More importantly, he cannot afford to look back on the missed chances as he will be needed in a few weeks‘ time, I assume.

Unfortunately I can't get too hopeful for Andy's chances at the Moselle Open next week because it's a strong field with all 8 seeds in the top 25.

In case, just in case he wins the first round, will he gain points?

Yes because he has no points to defend. He last played there in 2021 and reached the QF before losing to Hurkacz.
