The two have met on 22 occasions since 2005, including in two tour-level finals (2008 Doha, 2019 Antwerp) and two Grand Slam semi-finals (Roland Garros 2016, 2017). They’ve also met at the Nitto ATP Finals and at the London Olympics. Across these meetings Andy leads 13-9, their last one being in round 1 in Cincinnati last year with Andy winning 7-6(3), 5-7, 7-5.
38 year old Wawrinka's best results this year have been in reaching the quarter-finals in both Rotterdam and Marseille and round 4 in Indian Wells. He then exited in round 2 of Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome, losing in straight sets to Taylor Fritz, Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov respectively. In round 1 here he defeated World No. 336 Ugo Blanchet 6-3, 6-1 in 1 hr 22 mins.
