Well said, TJ - and in response to the part I've highlighted, Andrew Cotter said pretty much the same thing, i.e. that Andy needed to be more patient against Stepanek who was trying to rush him, and unfortunately it worked.  I doubt though if many players could have coped with the way Stepanek was serving.

I do think Stepanek made Andy rush, for sure. I agree about the way Stepanek was serving though. I think that caught everyone by surprise, including Andy. I certainly can't remember ever seeing him serve quite that well.

People will go on about the fact that Andy's loss today is his first on grass since the Wimbledon 2012 final, which is fair enough. What they won't point out is that means that Andy has a grass win/loss ratio of 25 wins and just two losses in two years. In my eyes that still makes him the best grass court player in the world.

Oh dear.

I didn't watch this as I was at work, but just the odd squint at Live Scores.  Going by the stats I could tell fairly early on that Andy wasn't fully in the match.  I had high hopes when I saw he was 6-2 up in the first tie-break, but that wasn't to be.

Judging by some comments on twitter from people who aren't loonies, Andy was a bit flat today, and didn't play to his ability.  In some ways I prefer that, as barring serious injury, it's something he can bounce back from.   Perhaps his legs are still a bit too heavy from RG, or maybe he let an Italian cook him dinner again?  Whistle

As has been pointed out, Nadal's loss was worse, so at least he might get a bit of a break from the press.  And Fed lost his first set, although he did turn it around.

I just hope Andy doesn't feel he's let Amelie down, and there aren't too many people trying to make it all about his new coach etc.  I know there will be some.

In a way, an early loss at Queens might relieve the pressure slightly come Wimbledon.   I just hope Andy feels he's had a bit of proper match practice, and presumably he'll be playing at Boodles again, and he can be nice and fresh for Rally for Bally.

That's a shame it just shows they are both human and that even Nadal can loose.

3 out of 4 of the RG semi-finalists played on grass this week and went out in the first or second round - says it all really.  The fourth is sunning himself on holiday - perhaps Djoko is the only one with any sense!

On that happy note I will say 'adieu'.  There are some very interesting and insightful posters on this forum and I have really enjoyed reading your posts but I just can't be bothered with the negativity of the few any longer - life's too short.  Take care one and all!

You have a point Aileen but there has to be a time where we stop using this as an excuse.

Prodigy, with all due respect, it isn't an excuse. Believe me when I tell you how hard recovering from any surgery can be, even without everything else Andy has been through. I've been under the knife a number of times in my life. It can take months to recover, both physically and emotionally, and I wasn't expected to play world class tennis right after.

Andy's been quite honest and open about his form and fitness since the surgery. We know he's had to take his training carefully to allow his back a chance to recover. We also know his back issues haven't magically gone away, but they are, according to Andy, much better.

I think Andy is having to learn to trust his body again. He was injured for two years, and you don't get over something like that quickly. For all we know Andy's injury could have been career threatening. It sounds like it was. I can't imagine him taking the risk of surgery (a risk to his career in itself) for something that could be managed without going under the knife. We know Andy tried everything he could before he resorted to surgery.

I agree with Aileen, I think a lot has gone on in the last 12 months, and none of it has been easy to deal with, but I have every faith that Andy will recover and get back to where he was.

Maybe but a drop down the rankings won't make it any easier for him.

After Wimbledon Andy is defending almost nothing. Plenty of opportunity to regain points.
