Queens R1: Andy Murray vs Alex de Minaur

I honestly think Andy came up against de Minaur having a fiendishly fantastic day. It was as if he could do no wrong.
I agree!!

DeM. played a perfect match against Andy doing what he does best: playing back every ball, defending. I was surprised how well he served and how easily he hit winners. Andy could simply not go toe to toe with him.

Bublik beating Zverev tomorrow would all but end Murrays Wimbledon seeding hopes, even with multiple withdrawals.

I don't think the top players will be chuffed that they could get Andy in R1.

It's not helpful. You saw what happened when he ran into a merely half decent top 20 player in De Minaur. I'm sure there's some who he could beat but it really just puts a cap on any damage he could do.

Anyway, Bublik won so seeding hopes are pretty much over. Gonna need 5 more withdrawals.

I watched on the BBC and one of the comms said at the end that the way de Minaur was playing he'd have tested Andy even when he was in his prime - something I'd agree with because DM played almost faultless tennis.

He didn't play so well against Schwarzman, mainly because his serve was off, but, although I didn't watch his matches against Mannarino and Rune, he's now through to the final where he'll play the winner of Alcaraz/Korda.

To be fair, I really think De Minaur is just about the worst match up Murray could have outside of Djokovic and Alcaraz. I'd certainly think he would be capable of beating Medvedev or Tsitsipas, for example, after a couple of weeks rest. It just really lessens the margin of error. A slightly bad day against one of the top seeds and its over and if its not over, it will mess him in future rounds. I really thought he had a chance to go deep this year but he's really at the mercy of the draw now. And let's face it, Murray very rarely gets luck in drawing these days. Honestly I'm half expecting it to be De Minaur again first round.

My concern is his lack of matches against current top 20 players  - and in fact prior to Queens, the last one was de Minaur in Monte Carlo - so playing in Stuttgart where he had ranking points to defend might have been a better option even if he didn't win it.

I wouldn't mind him getting a 'box office' R1 draw. He's unlikely to get too far anyway, so maybe an entertaining first match would be good for the tournament.

Entertaining final between de Minaur and Alcaraz.  Alcaraz won 6-4, 6-4 but the quality of play from both was excellent.

How many times have we seen Andy go out early to the guy who ultimately was either a finalist or a winner??!!

I was thinking that too, which is why I posted the result, particularly as it puts things a bit more into perspective.

This gets said after every defeat. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, but Murray getting destroyed 3 and 1 by this guy can in no way be spun. He went three tight sets with Mannarino and didn't even win the tournament in the end.

Nobody's making excuses for this defeat, just saying.
