They have played twice before, in R1 at Queens in 2017, with Thompson winning in straight sets, and in the semi-finals at Surbiton last year, which Andy won 7-6(5), 6-3.
30 year old Thompson, currently ranked No. 43, has a career-high ranking of No. 32 achieved on 26 February, and in doubles of No. 36 achieved on 6 May. He has won one singles and six doubles ATP titles. Following an unimpressive clay court season in singles, he lost in straight sets to Milos Raonic in R1 of the Libema Open, then in R1 here caused an upset by defeating Holger Rune 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.
