Murray's Ranking

Quote

Here's the table I promised yesterday, sorry for the delay in getting it up. I think this is the most basic way of giving the information for YE number 1.

Obviously there are scenarios where Andy and Novak could face each other in the SF, which would complicate the table. So if we get to that situation I'll make another table.

If you think I've got my numbers wrong please let me know.

Wow you've been busy, it looks complicated, so Muzz has to win all matches ? Really hope he can do it  pray

Many thanks for doing that ATL.  I'll have a proper look at it when my brain feels fresher than it does right now, and that is not an excuse btw.

No Andy doesn't have to win all matches. In short, as long as Murray does similar or better than Djokovic then he will stay number 1. Andy could even stay number 1 if he loses all his matches, as long as Djokovic also loses all his matches.

But for the different permutations you'll have to look at the chart above.

I like that simple explanation. Smile

One way or the other, he needs to beat Djoker. Either directly or by winning more matches. Which I honestly think Andy welcomes. He wants to be the champion by defeating the champion. To prove it to all, starting with himself.

That's the simplest I could make the table whilst also showing all the numbers. Would it help if I put some colours in the boxes or something?

No it is quite clear enough as it is with the explanation. Brilliant piece of work to follow as the tournament progresses. That might be the time to add colour as it pans out. Will just have to trust that the calculations are correct (which I'm sure they are!)

My apologies ATL.  I wasn't intending to complain about your painstaking chart when I said, tongue in cheek really, that I liked notnek's simple explanation.  I'll definitely be looking at it for guidance before and during the tournament.

Thx ATL!
Still don't understand this. Murray has only 200 points to defend (one win last year) and Djoko 1500?

The points from last year have already come off.

Thank you so much .

Perhaps those, whose brains, like mine, freeze at the sight of lists of numbers, might find this explanation I came across on the ESPN website more helpful -

If Murray wants to keep it simple, winning the World Tour Finals would make him the year-end No.1.

There are other, more complicated scenarios in which he can still finish 2016 atop the rankings, though: if he matches or does better than Djokovic; if he finishes runner-up with three round-robin wins and the Serb wins the title with one round-robin win; or if Murray wins three round-robin matches and Djokovic is runner-up with one round-robin win.

Djokovic is far from helpless in this, however. If he successfully defends his title with at least two round-robin wins, he will finish as the No.1 for the fifth time in the past six seasons.

going back a bit to all those lovely tweets.  It's striking how many are from female players. And no coincidence I think.  Many of them have really appreciated the support that Andy has given to women's tennis in various ways.
thanks for the calculations atl. Must admit I'm a bear of little brain when it comes to grappling with them but that's me not you.
