Murray's Ranking

Andy is guaranteed to stay No 1 until the AO points drop off on the 30th January, even in the unlikely event he were knocked out in the first round. I make that 13 week (same as Andy Roddick).  If he were to win the AO then how strong would he be in the No 1 points stakes then? I know there is someone on here that can work that out for us.

and in response to the voice of doom as has been explained on another thread it looks like delpo will sit out the AO to get back to full fitness first next year

Which sounds a wise idea to me, particularly as breaking his little finger during the 5th set of the DC final will have set his training back a little, particularly as carrying on playing won't have done much to help it.  Anyway I'd far rather see him play fit and well for a few months than struggle with fitness issues for the entire season.

On a side note: Delpo has been honoured with the Comeback Player of the Year Award by his peers for the second time - http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/del-potro-honoured-as-comeback-player-of-the-year-atp-awards-2016

I hadn't realised he'd broken his finger until reading it on here Aileen - I guess he can use that as justification for not entering AO as otherwise wouldn't he be penalised?

Not as far as I know Ruthie because Slams aren't run by the ATP and therefore aren't subject to their rules and regulations, so whether a player plays or not is probably up to them, although I can't imagine any player wanting to miss one without having a good reason for doing so.  I know Andy has said that perhaps, given the circumstances and with the benefit of hindsight, he should have skipped the AO this year.  He would certainly have lost ranking points but I expect that would have been nothing compared to all the stress he had to go through, not helped by his father-in-law taking ill during the tournament!

ah didn't realise that Aileen though of course in the past many of the top players chose not to travel all that distance so in those days it wasn't such an achievement to win it.

I can't remember any other players right now, but, as we know, Lendl skipped RG once with the intention of preparing for, and winning, Wimbledon.    Johnny Mac only played in the AO twice, getting kicked out of the tournament on his first visit for bad behaviour and verbal abuse, and reaching the SF on his second.  He also took 6 months out in 1986 saying that the pressures of playing at the top had become too much for him. to cope with.

Delpo to miss the Aussie Open. I suspect Andy and Joker won't be too unhappy as he'd be a potential nightmare R16 draw for either of them.

I genuinely hope he's back very soon because with Rafa and Fed on the wane, and the young guys going nowhere, tennis needs the likes of Delpo back at his best.

Not sure I'd write Rafa off just yet, provided he can stay injury free.  He looked pretty good today - even if bird allowed him to.

Yes Rafa is still young enough but I'm sceptical he will win another Slam.

I'm just wondering where the next Joker or Andy is coming from? Looking at the rankings there are only 3 guys 23 or under in the top 20.

Thiem is 23,  and ranked 8
Kyrgios is 21 and ranked 13
Pouille is 22 and ranked 15

Andy and Joker started winning Masters events when they were 21.  Can anyone see Kyrgios winning  a Masters anytime soon? Thiem is the best youngster but is already 23 and has won hardly anything so far.  It's almost like Rafa/Fed/Joker/Andy have raised the level its impossible for a 21 year old to win much nowadays. The physicality of the sport has increased so much. Maybe 26 is the new 21.

I'm guessing Andy's decision to play Qatar instead of Brisbane is 100% financial. How else can you explain it? Certainly not a decision you'd make if retaining the number 1 spot after the AO was the critical factor. Both Brisbane and Qatar have only 250 ranking points up for grabs but Qatar has a much stronger field including the Joker. Unless I'm mistaken Andy has reached the AO final every time he has played in Brisbane.

Maybe the stronger field was the point of him playing?  I doubt Andy needs any more money, tbh.
