Murray's Ranking

Quote

^ More of the same. He progresses up the rankings at a pace after the Cuevas win. Currently 210th on the live rankings. He will go past Jay Clarke if he wins against Copil. That would be stunning for someone in recovery from a major operation on his hip joint. GB number 4 beckons,

I am reminded of Dan Evans telling us this week that he may be ranked number 1 in GB but really that is Andy Murray and Kyle, Cam and himself are behind the Scot. I did not find his exact words but that is close enough.

Andy now at 155 in the world! If he beats Stan tomorrow he'll be around 127.

Nice. He's probably the British Number 1 already on current form.

Think I posted this on Dan's thread, but as I remember it you're right about what he said, about Andy anyway.

OK - found it ...

"I don't look at myself as British number one. I think Andy is British number one, and then there's me, Cameron [Norrie] and Kyle [Edmund] behind him."

Congratulations to Andy, what an achievement and comeback from January to October. He now sits just outside the top 100. As Dan Evans said recently Andy is the real British Number 1, other players were only keeping his place warm. Bad year for Kyle, so many people thought that he was the natural replacement for Andy, but as it has worked out so far, he is not a Tim Henman nor a Greg Rusedski but more an Andrew Castle level player.

Andy will be restored to his rightful place as British number 1 early in 2020. I think he could return to the top ten. I would love for him to win the AO and one more Wimbledon then retire on his own terms. Andy Murray 5 times Grand Slam champion has a great ring to it.

Yesterday on winning he was up to 127th on the live rankings and with ranking points removed for others he is officially at 126th today. Three others are in danger of dropping below him this week but others may go above.

I think that is way beyond what he was expecting. I do think his goal has to be top 100 early in 2020 and up to top 50 before he has to drop points. That get him entries without protected ranking in use.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens next year.  Personally I would like to have seen him keep the momentum going, but of course with baby due any day now that isn't going to be possible, although he said he might play in the Davis Cup (18-24 Nov), if chosen.  Also having played four tournaments in as many weeks, something he hasn't done since 2014, he might not feel up to it mentally as well as physically.  Better to go out this season in a blaze of glory than in R1 to a NextGen whit-kid!

I see that he is now right next to Del Potro in the rankings. Both are not playing at present.

Any games played and won now just would advance Andy up the list as he has no points to drop. Will a better ranking position be needed later for entries? Not sure if he still has protected ranking entries left or available after so long. At some time will he likely lose the w/c invite options also?

Cameron Norrie ranked at 77 is just at that point where he plays qualification tournaments, 300 points ahead, so Andy has to consider when it is important to try to improve his ranking.  Thinking here of end of year for his intentions for AO participation. That  assumes he plays soon, has the other surgery and gets back into playing in time!

A lot has changed since that last post of mine.

First round win at US Open puts him at 106 in the live rankings.  That is a major advance and will get him closer to automatic entries where he wants to play. He would need to win twice more to make top 100 at this tournament. A hard task with the young Canadian or Monteiro next up and each round better players. I think everyone was incredibly happy for Andy today.

I wouldn't say that his next opponent, 20 year old Félix Auger-Aliassime, is a better player than Andy, just that as he's a lot younger he's got a better chance of recovering from his gruelling 4 setter more quickly than Andy probably will from his match.   However you're also going to have youth against experience.  FAA may have won the USO junior singles in 2016 but he's yet to win an ATP Tour title - not that he's had much chance of doing so this year - plus his 6 Challenger titles have all been on clay, a surface he prefers.

^ I was not talking about FAA being a better player than Andy. He is not but this is about styles and who will win. The better players referred to what Andy must expect  after the first round!  This match will be interesting as FAA's strong positive play would have suited Andy the defender and counterattack player of the past but it may be a little too strong for him at present. Did you hear Tim Henman's assessment of why Andy lost those first two sets yesterday?  Spot on.  He did seem to start  with doubts in his head about longer matches and forgot the game plan to win. He needs that very much for this match. There seems to be no obvious big weakness, as in a Zverev game, to exploit. It will be hard.

^ Thank you MA.  Yes I understand what you mean now although I didn't hear Henman's assessment.

Well, we can now start to look at this topic with more interest.

Currently he shares 755 points with Lucas Pouille so they are ranked 100 & 101 in the live standings. He has done what he had to this week to start to gain points so he has more entries guaranteed soon. Strangely IF he beat his next opponent he would be just three points behind Kyle Edmond but I just cannot see that happening.

I have got the ball rolling again on this topic. Do you think we need to start looking at where he might play as he does seem keen to compete at LTA competition level?

Andy’s ranking is up to 102, should be enough to get direct entry to the USO.
