I am both sickened and saddened by the vicious and unwarranted attack by members of MW on Masaka, who was 'clearly' responding to TJ's post! Gangsta, I went against my friend Joe to stick up for the young people on this site just the other day and you have let me down already and let your friends down too! God only knows how Aileen will feel when she reads this and she almost certainly will.....She'll be so disappointed! Shame on you!

Well said!!!! There has been a lot of nastiness on a no of threads lately. Goodness knows what guests must think. There's a huge difference between difference of opinion and personal attack. Pack it in!

I deleted my comment, for Aileen's sake.

Is it any wonder people are getting fed up? It's relentless the talk of Rafa/cheating/doping. Nearly every single thread you go on its being brought up. As been stated before there are designated threads for these discussions. If I went slightly off the boil with my comments I apologize. masaka may well have being replying to teejay on that particular post but she has said time again that she will keep that talk to doping/off topic threads and unfortunately this hasnt been happening.

If anyone wishes to read my response to this post, which I hasten to add is not a rant, please refer to the Off Topic Thread.

In the meanwhile, given there is a strong possibility that Murray might take some time out I think that he might well end the year at 4 or 5. I await the fount of all knowledge on this topic's take on this - The Mad Hatter

What I've heard suggested numerous times was that Nadal's break was due to mental burnout. This makes sense when you look at how things in the year prior to his match against Rosol panned out (regular losses to Djokovic etc).

Now can we get off talking about Nadal and back on to what this thread is supposed to be about, Andy's ranking. Not who's a cheat and who's irritating.

That definitely makes sense. The way Rafa plays it's understandable that he gets burnt out - he basically makes nearly every final of every tournament he plays. That's a lot of tennis.

As for Andy's ranking...unfortunately he lost 1,640 points with his QF defeat. Hopefully he can have a good run in Asia again like he did in 2011 so he can get back some points. Titles in Bangkok and Tokyo would improve his ranking total by 570 points (he's defending 180 in Tokyo). Then he's got 600 to defend in Shanghai - but a title there is definitely achievable for Andy.

Next year I hope he'll play more consistently in the Masters events. I know his aim has been to peak for the slams and not focus so much on the Masters, but it's a risky strategy if it doesn't pay off. Hopefully he'll find a balance where he can play close to his seeding in the Masters while still peaking in the majors.

I have very little expectation Andy will achieve much in Asia. The drive and motivation have gone for the time being. Hopefully he'll be up for the WTF in November though.

As regards his ranking potentially falling to 4 or 5, 4 would be ok but 5 could be very damaging for the Aussie Open.

You never know with Andy - perhaps the USO loss will motivate him to regroup in Asia? If not though, the WTF will be a good target to aim for - it'd be a great achievement to win Queen's, Wimbledon and the WTF in London in the same year.

Andy's more or less guaranteed to stay in the top 4 for the Aussie Open. Berdych's over 2,000 points behind him in the race, plus he has a Shanghai SF plus Stockholm title to defend. Although Andy may drop down to 4 for a short while (Ferrer has nothing to defend in Beijing/Shanghai), I think he'll end the year as number 3.

At this current moment in time, Andy's Top 3 spot is in no clear jeopardy. If he wins Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai, he'll reclaim most of the points he lost. He needs to get far in WTF though, maybe try and win that. Also without putting too much pressure on him, a SF or QF at the Paris Masters will heavily increase his points count.

I have been busier on the Formula 1 sites over the week end as many interesting thing unfolding over there.
But back to topic Rafa, Nole and Andy are the three best players in the world. Andy is safe at number 3. If Andy was number 2 or number 1, then he could still meet the number 3 at a semifinal, so no advantage for him being number 2 other that he would not meet the number 1 before the final. These three players share the slams, Andy has been to two of the finals, as has Rafa. One of Rafa or Nole will end the year with two slams, Andy and the other will have one each. I would like Andy to take a break after Davis Cup and aim for (the 5th slam) O2 WTF, that would also be a nice lead into SPOTY and set him up for his first goal next year the Aus Open.

I still feel Andy's main focus will be Shanghai and the WTF. I could be wrong of course. I quite like his chances at the WTF if he gets himself right. I'm thinking home crowd advantage. I know it didn't go that way last year, but Andy hadn't won Wimbledon then.

I get a feeling Japan could go one way or another to be honest. Maybe Andy will feel motivated now the USO is out of the way.

I know the ranking is important, but I'm not going to fret about it. It's more important Andy is physically right - I'm still not convinced he was in New York - and he gets his head back in the right place, but I'm sure a good run in Asia would do him good for the WTF, which I also regard as the fifth slam in a way.

I agree with tj that best not to fret about rankings for the time being.  If Andy needs time out to recuperate or stays playing but below par for a while because he's lost some of his motivation, we just need to be patient (and I include myself in that because like others I want him to do well all the time).  I'm sure he'll bounce back just as soon as he's ready.

Why don't people get it? Its not complicated, its simple probability. With Andy at number 2 he has a 50% probability of getting the spare wheel in the semi-finals. At number 3 he has zero chance of getting the spare wheel.

Ah but you  forget sod law, my bignose friend! Andy got Fed and Nadal in his half at Wimbledon, then get Nole at US Open ie. two GS in a row.

I couldn't care if Andy took the rest of the year off.

If he's burnt out and that's what he needs to come back stronger, then I'm fine with that.

I struggle with the rankings stuff, so hypothetically speaking, if he did that and came back for the AO, would that help him in the points for next year?

Over to the experts, thanks...
