Murray's Ranking

Quote

So it's pretty clear now. Novak has to lose in the semi finals or final and Andy has to make the semi finals and possibly the final if Novak makes the final or they play in the semi.

The dream scenario is that they meet in the final. I have tix for the semi so a little bit of me hopes they meet then. Either way the two meeting and having a single match to decide year end number 1 would be excellent for the sport.

If you think I've got my numbers wrong please let me know.

ATL, There seems to be an issue with Davis Cup Points.  You show figures with them deducted. As this happens later in the year than this should they be missing in the Number one computation?  I am confused by the end of year dates. It would seem simpler if they were deleted before the end of year tournament.

I am sure that you explained all this to us last year but it may help those looking at this for the first time?

That is the question I was about to ask

I'm not sure what you are asking MA.

The year end is literally the end of the calander year, but it is unusal that anything happening after the WTF has an impact on the YE#1 ranking. It is just that in 2014 and 2015 the DC final did play a part in where Federer and Andy ended the year in the rankings, though in Federer's case in 2014 it ended up not actually influencing anything.

I deducted Andy's 2015 Davis Cup points already for simplicity as they officially drop on the 28th November and are a factor in the Year End #1.

There were scenarios where Andy could end the WTF as #1 but then drop to #2 after the 28th because of the DC points dropping off.

It seemed to me to be unnecessarily complicated to present those scenarios on the table, so I tried to make it as simple as possible, and Yamor seemed to agree with my numbers.

I think that even though the DC points have not dropped yet almost everyone is making their calculations with them deducted.

I was confused because the trophy for year end no 1 is presented at the wtf so what happens about adding the D.C. points for the final in past years

Has it ever been an issue before where the dropping of the DC points would influence the end of year ranking?

ATL,

Sorry to confuse. I read a misleading newspaper article that deducted Davis Cup points later than the O2. Others may have read same. Probably because this year's DC final points are added later?

I am happy now with the figures and what is needed from Andy!

Simple that he has to win one more match than Novak in London as always was the case!  I have to assume that Andy will win against Raonic. My heart tells me that it would be better for Novak to lose the other semi rather than play the final to decide the top end of ranking.  Could we cope with the pressure let alone Andy!

But if so would he then win the final? Perhaps not. Stranger things have happened and he daren't play Nishi as he did in the RR.

Here's another stat which could be interesting.

What is the highest ever ranking points total (anywhere in the season?) .  I seem to remember Novak topping 14,000. Is that correct?

Djokovic maxed out at an astronomical 16,950 points after winning RG this year and held all four GSs.

His achievement was astounding. Even the mighty Fed could only reach 15k+ points.  If Andy continues winning at the current rate, I think Andy can break into the 14+k points territory in Q1 next year.

I really hope Andy can hold on to his number 1 ranking here as it will give an extra 10 weeks stay at the top thanks to the off season and the fact Djokovic has so many points to defend in Q1 next year.  I think if Andy can stay top, he will remain there till Wimbledon at the very least (35+ weeks as number 1 which would be a nice addition to his already burgeoning CV Smile

Live atp rankings at my usual preferred site seems not to have woken up to the fact that the semis have been played though. It is always nice to see the list!?

I remember posting regularly on here when Murray first started out (and I had a lot more time on his hands). Remember how excited we got when he one his first title in Memphis against Hewitt. I never imagined then, that all these years later he would be Year end number 1. What a journey! It's been a pleasure.
