I think, but I am not sure that as each tournament and its available points passes, the cut of point for qualification becomes lower and lower, so the scenario you postulate simply couldn't occur. Perhaps somebody else could offer a more  comprehensible explanation?

Where did this quote come from? It does sound very positive, and encouraging that the lad is not thinking of hanging up his racquet quite yet.

Ranking is not everything but it helps.  It is time for Andy to do a bit of confidence boosting this next period. Success is the best way to do this. A couple of good comfortable wins in Davis Cup Tie, miss the doubles if GB already winners, then target some good points in his Asian swing events by getting to finals or semis in each. That would be a good start.  Then treat Paris as a prelude to O2 as Queens was to Wimbledon. Getting good points there will "shelter" his ranking through to the Australian Open as one of the top three. He had only ten points from Paris last year which was to turn up! Ferrer has 1500 points to defend before the O2. I cannot see him salvaging a significant amount of those. If both Andy and Ferrer made quarters the gap between them grows by over 700 points.

Including the O2 Novak is defending 3000 points still in 2013 so it may happen Andy makes ground on him as well as leaving Ferrer behind. I do not talk about Rafa - all too convenient that injury. The others need a better game plan against him but come February he will be defending points so his massive points lead will not grow more.

Does anyone know how Andy is going to start his 2014 campaign? There are a lot of options before the Aussie Open.

Its not a stupid question Teejay but they simply take  the top eight plus 2 substitutes who come next if they can be persuaded to sit around for 5 days in the hope of getting a match Was it two years ago when Andy was injured and lost to ferrer in the first round? Tipsarevic was coopted in Andy's place and did quite well
