Shanghai R1: Andy Murray vs Roman Safiullin

Quote

The two have met twice before, in R2 of the 2021 Rennes Challenger where Safiullin won in three, and R1 of the Swiss Indoors last year which Andy won 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

26 year old Safiullin is currently at a career high ranking of No. 41.  He has amassed 34 wins from 55 matches this season, including a title-winning run at the Koblenz Challenger and reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.  He also secured a runner-up finish at the recently concluded Chengdu Open where he put up a very good performance by defeating Brandon Nakashima, Dan Evans, Jordan Thompson and Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets en route to the final before losing to Alexander Zverev 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 6-3.

They’ve been playing 17 mins already. Andy first to serve, broken in first game.
Currently 0-2. Had I think 4 bp’s.

Missed the start but tune in and it's 2-0 Safiullin, but Andy holds serve.  CMON!!

Strange that the schedule said 2:00 o‘clock and when you switch in they are already playing. Not strange: Andy is immediately broken. Unfortunately, he could not convert any of his four BP as S was very solid and played powerfully.

Apologies for getting the time wrong.  It caught me out too!  But I can only go by what the tournie schedule says.

No need to apologize Aileen. I didn’t go by what you’d said, I just noticed your post when I’d already been watching.

This is dire stuff from Andy. Sad.

Not exactly encouraging I agree.

First set to S, who is playing as he certainly did when reaching a final in China. Big hitting from him overpowering Andy, not missing much. Tough to rally with him.

Another chance to break come and gone.

Andy has had plenty of BP, again one in this first game. But then S strikes back and there is really nothing Andy could do.
