Should Andy be favourite for Oz?

Quote

The bookies have made Andy favourite for the Oz open making him the first ever Brit to be made favourite for a slam. Truely good times! I would imagine this is only in the UK because of the rush of money backing Andy or has his form deserved such credit/pressure???  Ethier way well done Andy and good luck mate.

I wouldn't make him favourite.

It's close between the top 4 even Nadal. I think all 4 can make the semi's and then it's game on.

For Rafa I think it's more draw dependent than the other 3. There's probably a couple of players who he could do without meeting on a hard court before the semi's. He's no mug on these courts, making it to the semi here last year and making the semi at USO.

Roger for me is still the favourite in best of 5 hard court matches. I know he's lost to Andy a few times since the USO but he really played well against Nole and Andy at the USO.

Nole seems a little under done at the moment but he may play himself into form in sydney. He cruised the title here last year. Fed was ill in the semi though but if Nole can find some form he wil be tough to beat.

Andy has been the guy to beat since Wimbledon and apart from the Olympics only the cream of tennis has beaten him. Right now, he has to make the semi's because he's been beating the 'also rans' and 'challangers' whenever he's played them.

If the top 4 do make the semi's then I dunno, all 4 could win if you ask me. I think for the draw I would prefer Andy to be in Feds half because if he does play Rafa in the Semi it's probably going to be another long one and then it would be Fed or Nole in the final.

I still have concerns that Andy will struggle to beat 2 of Rafa, Fed and Nole in 2/3 days in a slam.

I would make the favourites in this order.
Fed
Andy
Nole
Nadal

Then a big gap and maybe one of Tsonga/Del Potro

Being the favourite means he will enter the Aussie Open under pressure and therefore at a disadvantage. Think of the headlines if he falls to one of the lesser-hyped players, or if his back is more serious than is apparant just now. Whenever he wins a slam it will be in his own time, the same as every other improvement in his game that has come about over the last 2 years. I am hoping he will win a slam this year, but will not be concerned if he wins it instead in 2010. I believe if he plays this way consistently and without injury that it will be this year.

There will be a dark horse and a surprise or two at the Austrailian Open I feel - there always is.

But if we do end up with Murray, Nadal, Federer & Djokovic in the semi's I'd agree that Murray is (currently) slight favourite. However, of the four of them, none would be a surprise winner.

Probably not...but it still sounds good.

I also believe he should. Simply because on current form, he's beaten all the top guys in the run.up except Djoko who floundered ...

He is the best player in the world, he deserves to be favourite.

The thing is Hard court grand slam you first think of Federer as the fav but most would back Murray to beet him in the final now. so it may be close but on draw possibility and games between the top 4 you would have to fancy Murray.  So Murray should be favorite at say odds of 2 or 3 to 1 But should still not be Expected to win.  ie no 1 of the other players is more likely to win it but given the odds of any one of say (Fed, Nadal, Djoko, Simon and Tsonga) wining the tornament we should just be happy he is the favorite but not expect him to necessarily win

They have him as joint favourite in Oz at the moment (as reported on Sky News Oz Sunday morning) with Fedex.  They say that he's the player of the moment - on fire actually!  They made comment of how funny it was that Andy's  British when he's winning and as soon as he loses, then he's Scottish Very Happy  That's how it's always been, hasn't it?

Its never easy to call at the AO. Finalists in last 3 years: Gonzalez, Tsonga and Baghdatis (the latter 2 from absolutely nowhere) and then Thomas Johansson winning from a wilcard entry i think, which is just mad. So i think we need to be wary Andy has been made favourite because we could end up with any of the top 20 in the world playing a past it world number 143........ in the final. anyone agree? and yeah its always the same with these gloryhunting english news channels.

how long has federer or nadal done this? if you want to be a champion you need to live with this.
