Stockholm QF: Andy Murray vs Tommy Paul

Quote

Having caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far, Andy now plays 24 year old American and world No.52 Tommy Paul, who also confounded the pundits by defeating the fifth seed and fellow American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4.  In this match Fritz struck eight aces and saved two of the three breakpoints he faced, while Paul fired six aces without having his serve broken.

Paul, who won the junior French Open title in 2015 and who considers clay to be his favourite surface, recorded the first of the biggest wins of his career by beating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-4 in Acapulco in 2020, his second one coming in round 3 of Indian Wells where he defeated Andrey Rublev in three sets before losing in similar fashion to Cameron Norrie.  After qualifying for Paris he reached round 2 where he was narrowly defeated 7-5, 7-6(7-4) by Hubert Hurkacz.  At this year's French Open he took Daniil Medvedev to four sets in round 2.  He has never won an ATP Tour title but has won 8 Future titles, 6 of them on clay.  He also has 4 Challenger titles, 3 of them being on hard courts.

Paul plays a solid game, not having too many weapons but being able to use his groundstrokes, particularly his forehand, to win points offensively and defensively.  His footwork is good along the baseline and he's quick coming into the net.

The match is scheduled for not before 5 pm GMT.

Let us hope that he is fresh enough to do himself justice and we see the magnificent pro-active play from the Sinner match.

He loves winning so i hope so, Did anyone see a post match interview from yesterday.

If he plays like yesterday with same motivation and consistency…he’ll win 100%.  Keep it up and he’ll win the tournament.

I feel this is a really important match in the whole context of his comeback. He's posted a few really good results this year and followed them up with a loss, and as a result he's struggled to get any confidence or momentum. If he wins today I believe that's 3 wins in a row for the first time all season? It would be fitting to do in the last tournament of the year.
Come on Andy!

^  He would also rise back to British number 4. I would  like to see him reach a final to cement the recent greater confidence and consequential improvements.  I dare say we will all be following the match later if we can?

SORRY CORRECTED TO RANKED 4.  I forgot Kyle still hanging in there despite playing.
