Stockholm R1: Andy Murray vs Viktor Durasovic (Q)

Quote

Viktor Durasovic is a 24 year old Norwegian player of Serbian origin, currently ranked No.351, who will be making his ATP Tour debut at this tournament, having up till now primarily performed on the ITF circuit, winning 8 titles and being runner-up on 6 other occasions.  His one Challenger final came in Portoroz, Slovenia, in 2019 where he was defeated 7-5, 6-3 by Aljaz Bedene.  His only previous attempt to qualify for an ATP tournament, which was in Bastad in July, failed when he lost in straight sets to the then world No.122 Denis Novak.  In the qualifying here he defeated former world No.43 Teymuraz Gabashvili in three sets.  Playing in the Davis Cup, Durasovic has a W/L record of 9–9 in singles and 4–5 in doubles, his one notable success coming at the inaugural edition of the ATP Cup in January 2020 where, partnering Casper Ruud, he helped Norway to a shock 2-1 victory over the US by defeating Austin Krajicek/Rajeev Ram 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.

As for Andy, he's taken Jo Konta's former coach Esteban Carril on board as part of his team for this tournament for what has been described "as a week's trial basis".  Carril, who helped Jo rise from outside the top 100 to inside the top 10, has just completed a successful two year stint coaching Katie Swan.  He also had a recent brief trial period with Emma Raducanu who is hoping to find a coach before the Australian Open but, for whatever reason, it didn't work out.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday not before 5 pm GMT

I am hoping that he will want to win this one so will do so in straight sets. He clearly has the ability and experience with the current state of his play to do so. His opponent sounds staedy but I have never seen him play. I have been watching on Amazon Prime so will miss this match unless I find another video link. With this new trial coach I wonder if that will be encouragement enough to want to get the win in a positive fashion.
As Katie Swan is/was in his management team has Andy a contact that way?

I see that Durasovic's family are of Serbian origins although he was born in Norway. His tennis record seems to be good especially in Davis Cup so he is more than capable of an upset. Let us hope that we do not see the Andy that waited for Koepler to lose points but the Andy that would compete against the better players to try to win points to try to succeed.

This should be fairly routine for Murray, but he's made a habit of complicating straightforward matches this year. I've not seen this guy play but I'm sure there will be areas where he can trouble Murray.
But let's say he does progress, its probably the best possible time to play Sinner. He's looked jaded the last couple of matches and suffered mentally in that loss to Tiafoe.
A decent run this week might buoy him in the off season.

^ I watched highlights of his match against Taylor Fritz in the ATP Cup.  Not that you can judge much from them but he did seem pretty average as his ranking would suggest.  However these players seem to have a habit of raising their game when playing Andy.  Agree about Sinner though because I think it came as quite a blow when he failed to qualify for Turin.  It'll also be interesting to see what changes, if any, Carril has managed to bring about in such a short period of time.

Thanks Aileen, I'm curious about the addition of Carril and how Andy thinks he can add value.
Fingers crossed this is on later tomorrow

Interesting voting - I see somebody has gone for Durasovic in 2 ....

Also for those who don't have BT Sport or TennisTV, hopefully a link to a free live stream will be provided

PS - Given that this tournament finishes on Saturday then Andy won't have the luxury of a day's rest between matches, so he'll need to get them over with as quickly as possible, starting with this one, because if he gets past Durasovic Sinner won't be easy.

First set Andy 6-1.  Serving well but Durasovic has started playing some impressive shots.
