I think what Andy did is known as winning ugly,
Essentially! Brad Gilbert must be proud

I take a different view about this match to many above.
It appeared to be quite windy, as it often is in Toronto, and both struggled with that. I watched it all. Sonego seemed to find it hardest but Andy, I thought, coped better in both sets. He won the first because he has a mental tactical and skills advantage and the second because the Italian has less ability in those competitive skills.
As I remember 'winning ugly' highlighted that you had the better skills to still win when not playing at one's best? That is fine by me.
Well done Andy, you are now into the top 40 in the live rankings.
Good luck in the next round.

What Andy said -
“It really wasn’t pleasant to play in. It was really blustery, changing direction during the point, and we knew coming in it was going to feel uncomfortable. We hit on this court this morning and it was really breezy.
“So I was expecting it but it still adds a bit of stress to the match and it was a really tight first set. There were lots of opportunties each way. I managed to sneak through the tie-break and after that he was obviously a bit disappointed, and I relaxed a little bit.”

You're so lucky! Hope the rain is staying away.
I know it! It’s been 8 years since I last saw him live.

It was so great watching Andy today. It’s very different watching in person, you really see the explosive movement and power.
It was very, very windy. But I had absolutely no worries that Andy would come through this, he’s very good at adapting in windy conditions (anyone remember Berdych USO match? When his hat fell off and chairs were flying across the court.)
I shouted and cheered my head off!!
I’ve got pics but can’t remember how to post, it’s been a while..
Also saw loads of other players..
Jamie
Berrettini
Zverev
Felix
Cam Norrie hitting with Cerundolo
McKenzie MacDonald and Karatsvev
Monfils hitting with Alcaraz!!!
Borna Coric and Vukic (I was chatting with Vukic’s coach, he was sitting right next to me)
I was at Zverev v Griekspoor match.
Phew.. fun day!

Wow!! A fun day indeed! I remember that Berdych match and if Andy could cope with that he could cope with anything!
