Toronto R2: Andy Murray vs Max Purcell (Q)

The two have played before in round 2 of Newport last year with Andy winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 despite being affected by cramp in the deciding set.

The 25 year old Australian who plays singles mainly on the Challenger Tour, is currently ranked No. 78 in singles (highest No. 62 in June) and No. 48 in doubles - highest No. 25 in July 2022 after he and Matthew Ebden won the doubles title at Wimbledon.  He has no ATP Tour singles titles, 5 Challenger titles (3 of them this year) and 3 doubles titles.  In round 1 here he defeated an out-of-form Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4.

According to Andy after their last match "He has a very different gamestyle to a lot of the players on Tour nowadays. He was using a lot of slice off of both sides, which is very rare.  It took some time to get used to that way of playing.  Then once I started to find my rhythm a little bit in the middle of the second set, I was able to dictate points and push him around the court a little bit more".  Purcell is also noted for his powerful serve and aggressive play.

I saw some bits and pieces of Purcell vs. FAA. The Aussie looked immaculate on serve and seemed to have struck the ball effortlessly for winners. Hard to say how much it was down to FAA‘s poor form.

Andy's focus is definitely not 100 percent. However, as far as I'm concerned Purcell is a loser merely by virtue of his terrible kit—in the pastel shorts, dreary T-shirt and black socks he looks exactly like some guy hanging out at home in his underwear!
