Toronto R3: Andy Murray vs Jannik Sinner

Quote

The two have met twice before - the Stockholm Open in 2021, where Andy won 7-6(4), 6-3, and the Dubai Championships last year, with Sinner winning 7-5, 6-2.

21 year old Sinner, who is at a career high ranking of No. 8, has 7 ATP Tour titles, 4 of them achieved in 2021.  At Wimbledon he reached his first Grand Slam semi-final, losing to Djokovic in straight sets.  This is his first tournament since then and in his first match defeated Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-3.

The match is scheduled last on Center Court, so around 9:00 pm local time, 2:00 am BST

I did not see any press conference feedback from Andy after his last match to indicate any fitness issues. I just hope that he is not too tired after his long match yesterday and that he can enjoy playing someone as good as Sinner. His last two opponents were awkward to play but I think the Italian looks to have a more usual game.

No doubt Andy will want more than that and to win?

Not totally impossible.

Sinner will be a lot easier to watch than Purcell was, and his mega dreadful outfit didn't help,  In fact he and Rublev are my two favourite NextGen players, because both have pleasant personalities as well as being very good players.

I see what you mean about the outfit.   Come back Stan Wawrinka (when he won the French Open) all is forgiven!  Yes, Sinner is great to watch and as you said a good personality.

I don't think Wawrinka's ever lived that sartorial embarrassment down!

He revelled in it! Don't you remember when he had a keyring or something made with a mini version of the shorts attached? Also I believe the outfit is displayed in the RG museum!!!

FYI, everyone, it's raining here in northeastern North America, including in Toronto (although not Montreal where the women are playing), so play is suspended. Could delay Andy's match considerably.

I spoke too soon! It's now raining in Montreal as well...

Update (3:20 pm EST): still raining in Montreal and NYC but now sunny in Toronto!

It’s been stormy and humid here. But all cleared up now and sunny.
Meddy and Musetti playing now, so hopefully time back on track.

Desperate bummer news. Andy's decided to withdraw. They're waiting for him to come out and speak to the crowd. Evidently an abdominal strain or something but I guess he'll tell us. Oh boohoo!
He says it's similar to what happened to him last year after Stuttgart but not as bad. Clearly hoping that dealing with it now will mean he won't have to miss the US Open. He seemed really upset about having to withdraw, needless to say. He apologized to everyone. Also rather gloomily, he said he'd always liked playing this tournament and that this could be the last time, which is really really depressing.

I've got the sound off, but thought it was odd he was being interviewed...

Abdominal issue. Withdrawn. He feels terrible for the crowd.

Oh bless him.  He's such an admirable soul.  And I stayed up especially...

Glad I saw him as he said it’s probably last time he’ll play here.
Andy very apologetic, and crowd respectful.
Staying behind signing autographs.
