It wasn't a poor performance like you would expect - Anderson played the match if his life, red lining everything, power, precision and full on high level tennis.  Murray never capitalised on his break point opportunities and Anderson's serve got him out of bother at crucial times.  Disappointing result but to write him off winning another slam us slightly premature.

I think this cold has really disabilitated Andy. At this level such things make a huge difference.
Yes, I too think the Davis Cup is step too far. He's come into the North American hard court season looking knackered.
I don't think he was going to win anyway, Fed and Nole have looked far sharper, and played less tennis, here at the Open and previously. Hindsights a wonderful thing, but that Mannarino match was a wake up call for our expectations, tbh.
However, I'm still amazed and grateful he's at the level he is after that back operation. It could have ended his carreer. Some of the numties posting here need to remember that. Rolling Eyes

Now that I've had my 4 hours of sleep(!), it's kind of sunk in that Andy has lost but props to Anderson for playing the match of his life - he really did.

Andy will be back to challenge for more slams in 2016 and beyond. Winning DC would still be a great thing to achieve and could put that fire back in Andy's belly. Look what it did for Fed and it only seemed like yesterday when he lost to Stakhovsky at Wimbledon, Robredo at USO and earlier this year at AO to Seppi. No one is immune to an early slam exit.

He should pull out of DC and focus on himself. It's not his fault that this country cannot produce any other decent players. I don't really give two hoots about DC. I want Andy to be remembered as a great player with more than 2 slams. His talent demands that he wins more.

Anderson played very well, granted. But Andy's tactics were wrong. He was very defensive, and allowed Anderson to dictate. Normally, he gets away with it, but when someone is playing that well, you don't. And he didn't.

Somebody mentioned that his game is constantly evolving. What I saw last night was a negative evolution. Negative body language, berating himself and his box etc.

Maybe the cold didn't help. Yes , he has played a lot of tennis. But unnecessary tennis. Too many sets lost which should have been won. It's been happening all year.

His woeful conversion of break points in the past few months speaks volumes about his mindset. Way too passive.

He's the world number three, He should be able to adapt. OK it's not his favourite court, but to blame it is simply avoiding the bigger issue.

Unfortunately, he had a bad draw plus having a very nasty cold- he did not retire went on so many players had to retire.
I too get so annoyed with peoples expectations he has had a back operation and is doing fine No. 3 in the world. I had  two minor back operations nothing compared to Andy's but I was told I would be in a wheelchair at 51 if I did not do as I was told. Through determination and exercising I am still playing tennis at quite a high level four hours a weekend and going to tennis camp next week. I think to play at this level is fantastic once Andy retires there will be no one for GB so let us enjoy his tennis and appreciate what we have instead of always complaining about him when he looses. He is human after all!!!

I went to bed at 5-1 second set and realised that I'd seen one really nice shot of Murray in this match. Tennis is supposed to be a fun game, not only about winning  but I saw  a disturbed (not to say troubled) Murray. It wasn't fun at all.    He can't handle the noise in the stadium. It's easy to predict a serves mistake, because often some noise is heard before. He has to deal with noise, disturbs and things like that. I read that after the 5-1 Murray raised he level. Good he did this. It's a shame he couldn't do that right from the start. The loss against Federer (Wimbledon) felt different; then the other player was the better one, that wasn't the case this time.

ps All those posts and words...I think we all are simply very disappointed that an other possibility to win a slam, the last this year, is simply over before the quarters even started....

Some of Andy's critics after this match should read what Andy said after this match, and he didn't make any excuses, but he did explain the difficulties of the court etc. I would like to point out that he was given a very difficult draw and that Anderson last night was playing out of his skin, whereas Andy was fatigued and recovering from the cold as well as playing on a court that didn't give him enough run back to deal with Anderson's serve or forehand. Anderson is the man who would have beaten Djokovic at Wimbledon but for the match being stopped after the fourth set. I wonder what would have happened if the match had stopped at the third set and Andy facing him the next day?

First thanks to all of you who have written as true Andy fans - disappointed but not berating him or writing him off.  On the other hand it's disappointing, though not surprising, that the usual suspects are out there doing the very opposite.
I have to admit I went to bed after the first set.  I was too exhausted to watch and I wasn't enjoying the match.  So I can't comment on how Andy played after that first set, which he could so easily have won and who knows what might have happened then.  But I've feared for a while that tiredness (accumulated because of lack of proper rest after Wimbledon) and his cold would do for him here. And then add the hated Armstrong court, which doesn't allow him to play against a big server in the way he'd like to, it was not too surprising to me that he lost.
I simply don't accept those who have argued that Andy isn't still looking to improve and some people seem to have totally missed the fact that he has clawed himself back up to the top of the game - indeed 2nd to qualify for the 02 above an in-form Fed - after back surgery that could have ended his career.  What a year he's had despite this early exit.
I'm so sad for Andy himself as it's clear he is so disappointed to have broken that run of slam QFs at a minimum.  I just hope he can pick himself up and do really well at the DC.  The fact that DC means so much to him is enough for me even though I agree that it's less important than his own singles career.  But it's a measure of the man that he is giving such priority to winning this for the team and 'the country'.
Do hope Kev now beats Stan (and doesn't have a slump after what must be best win of his life). And at least it's bye bye FF too.

I hope he (and the rest of the team) wins the Davis Cup so he's done that and he can focus again on the other matches. Like Stan did.

Federer only plays Davis Cup (against the Netherlands) because he has to do so before the Olympics.

Seeing Fed lose to guys like Anderson in slams made me think he's done for. And now he seems in firing form and a potential winner for the USO.

So if Fed can change his game plan and play such tennis, I'm sure Andy has still got it.

Yes, there is so much he needs to change in his game and attitude but i still see him winning slams.

I went to sleep towards the end of the third set, couldn't bear to watch any more, Anderson didn't seem to be loosing momentum for very long, if at all. To those critical of Andy's keenness on Davis Cup - Andy's career has already been very successful, he already has more money than he needs for three or four lifetimes, why shouldn't he put his energy into a team/national event. I doubt if it makes that much difference to his career anyway, money is not everything. Good for him I say and long may it continue.  

Andy still has the capacity to win slams, he still has the talent, the fitness and the will. The next Olympics loom large too. And next year he will be a Dad, life is full of new experiences for him, he still has time to be No. 1 too, bring it on - that's what I say. yay clap yay
