US Open 2015 R4: Andy Murray vs Kevin Anderson

Quote

Nicko,

I am posting the MM piece again to counter the vast number of posts from pessimists and knockers. They need to read it! Breakfast here in West Canada and to wake up to such a plethora of rubbish is not ideal.

I too think this the best written response after a loss like this. The US open is not the top tournament in the world and conditions there are not ideal for Andy. No excuses though for I will go out and support again next time wherever he steps out onto the court. His achievements demand that.

I had one eye on the match thread but came off it pretty quickly.  How some posters on here can call themselves Murray fans is beyond me and if some use the excuse of caring so much it turns them into a cycle of negativity - I would say - get a life, it's a tennis match.  Like Scotnadian, I have supported Murray since watching him play the Aberdeen Cup, a long, long time ago.  He will never have the consistency or robotic nature of Djokovic or Federer, if you want that switch allegiance.  He is a unique, Heart on sleeve, instinctive player.  Utter genius one minute and groan  inducing the next.  He's exciting, enthralling and different.  He is one of the best sportsman, this country has ever produced.
Last night he came up against a player who was red lining everything, played with power, precision and out of his skin.  It happens, Federer and Nadal have suffered early slam defeats before.  The guy was struggling with illness it has been plain to see, that is another thing that is beyond his control.
The Davis Cup has not helped, he has the weight of a nation on his shoulders, what other country relies so heavily on one player? He obviously wants to win it so badly and I hope he does so that thereafter , he can walk away having done his bit.  GB's position in the DC belies it's tennis ability and despite heroics from other lesser ranked players, at this level only Andy can secure the win.  I hope after the SF clash and hopefully a finals play off, he gets the recognition he deserves and calls it a day playing DC or at least until Scotland is independent then he can lead Team Scotland!!!
Sure last nights result was disappointing but there are mitigating circumstances - it's not like he went out there and inexplicably lost, he left his guts on that court last night and it wasn't to be.
As I say if this result leaves people in despair and wallowing I would say get a life or apply a bit of perspective - dissapointing - very much so but he lives to fight another day and is a million miles from where he was this time last year when he had dropped out if the top ten and was fighting for his place at the 02.  Can remember a few threads back then predicting he would never get back to the top, his career was over, he should retire etc etc etc.  Look what the DC win did for Djokovic, turned him into superhuman so there is still a lot to look forward to for the rest of the year.
Who cares what measures people use to denote success in a players career - Andy Murray is the greatest tennis player in the modern era to come from these isles  - there won't be another in my lifetime - enjoy it while you can and appreciate it as we really don't know what we've got till its gone.
To the doom merchants on this site - he lives to fight another day, Lendl has gone, he's still in the top 3, he's qualified for the O2 and if he disappoints you that much then move along to Djokovic's World or Federer's World - maybe not Nadal's world, he's having a bit of a struggle right now!!!

You could argue that the US Open has come from being his best slam to now being his worst slam.

Also Andy's recent form has been really similar to 2009. As in 2009 he won Queens, made SF of Wimbledon, won Montreal, lost in SF of Cincy to Federer and lost in R4 of US Open!

And I've just read an article from Tennis World who is already asking "Does Andy Murray really complete the Big 4 ?"
I'm not posting the link here.... It's full of blah blah blah.... And Federer blah blah blah.... And Djokovic, and so on.......

He loses a match before the quarter finals of a slam and already his place in the grand scheme of things is being questioned? lol is all i can say to that nonsense

This was what i mean with Andy. For a guy who continually states that he's feeling calmer and more relaxed lately, this clip kind of goeas agaisnt that. I mean, i don't know who he's directing his rant to but near the end, he's going on about someone never asking questions and they are a c**k.

Beware, this is x rated stuff and pretty sad to see  shocking

Sounds like he's looking over at someone and saying "f*****g kills me that I'm never f*****g asked.  Ask me a question you c**k."

????

That's the worst I've ever seen him.  Really unacceptable actually and he'll probably be fined.  The ball kids were totally disturbed by it.  They looked so uncomfortable.  I hope he gets help with it because it could be pretty self destructive.

He interacted a lot with a spectator last night.  It was totally bizarre.  Could he have been making a point because he didn't feel like he was getting enough support from his own people?  Just a thought I had, based on not much really.  Could be totally wrong.  On the other hand, his rant could be directed at only himself.  Pretty ugly.

Gnome,

It is bound to happen. Better he went out fighting than to submit by retirement or withdrawal by illness? To play at all those early rounds in severe heat was a sign of his will to succeed and how good he is.  Jamie had better go at least another round as the provider of the cold!

I thought the same- I think something is not right between him and his team at the moment, that's why I think he was fist pumping at that fan rather than his own team.

Some really fantastic posts after the hangover of that match. Thanks Smile

I've been sticking around for the live match threads because I can handle the kids. Not much rattles me. nah

That vid of Andy ranting is probably Andy talking to Andy. He's always done that. I do think he needs to stop it because it's very self destructive.

I went through a depression last year (hunky dory, now Smile)and I had a polarizing incident when my son suddenly barked at me one day (a shocker in itself!) and said: "Mum! Stop calling yourself 'stupid!'" Well, I'd been doing constant monologues, downing myself, and it became so inherent that I no longer noticed. When my son barked me out of it, it really changed my perception.

I hope Andy brings his self motivational lists to court again.

We are so lucky to have him. His talent and eventual legacy is priceless.

Like many on this site I've given up reading posts during matches because of the viciousness of many comments.  Murray lost last night. He's not happy about it. I'm not happy about it. But what is the point of the nastiness and personal attacks by many here? Is that expected to make him win? I do understand that many people get frustrated by loss, but what is the positive effect for Murray that people expect from berating him and denigrating his abilities?  I'm not a Boris Becker fan but maybe it would help to remember "Nobody died."

Scotnadian,

I am enjoying your adopted country (assumption there) and like this comment. Well said. I think that I am one of few that think that he is lifted by his successes in the Davis Cup.  That the semi is back in his homeland in Scotland should be such a lift to him. He will after all be playing with Leon Smith as Captain which I think suits him well.

Sadly I will miss the chance to go and watch (a mix of Calgary and Toronto that week I think) but his support alone meant it was sold out so quickly tickets would be difficult.  I treasure being at Queens to watch him see off the French. Time for a repeat. I hope the hotel wi-fi is good enough to follow it.

Canada adopted me, MA. 17 years ago. Great country with so many time zones, and glad you are enjoying your time here. Smile

I'm lucky enough to get to see him at the Rogers Cup, but I'd give anything to see him at the Davis Cup in Glasgow. It's going to be raucous and, I'm sure, emotional and invigorating for Andy. Just what he needs right now.
