Well we haven't had this feeling since.....

Quote

....the end of the Wimbledon final.

Yes that's how long it's been since we here at MW have had to endure this empty feeling of an Andy Murray defeat in a slam and it quite frankly sucks. To make matters worse, it has resurrected some of the anti Murray trolls who now have great pleasure in spamming the tennis forums with new ammunition (He's going to be a one slam wonder, he has lost 5 out of 6 finals).

But to hell with them i say, as much as i feel down about him losing, i also have renewed faith that this is but a momentary blip in an otherwise upward curve so let us examine the aftermath and what it means in this here thread.

Andy has been in the last 3 slam finals it is now becoming a habit for him.

The 6 finals he has played have all been against the number 1 player in the world.

His mentor Ivan Lendl won 8 slams by the end of his career after only winning 1 of his first 8 finals.

He is curently the second best player in the world.

He WILL win more slams, it is as inevitable as the sun rising each day.

Losing only adds to his experience, the more finals he reaches the more chance he has of winning them.

He is the only player in the world capable of matching and even beating Novak in a slam final, there is not much between them physically.

He is only 25, he has at least 3-4 more years at the top, maybe even 5 or 6 if current skill and physical curve remains constant.

He is becoming visibly more calmer as his career progresses.

There is nobody on the horizon who looks even remotely close to catching him up, Fed is on the Wane, Nadal may be a spent force, the young guns do not impress.

He has Ivan Lendl as his coach, for the first time in his career he finally has the perfect backroom staff to help him conquer the world.

I'm sure there are many other plusses, but i feel just as Andy himself will take away nothing but positives from his fantastic run, we at MW should do exactly the same, so for all of us here let's not get too despondant about things and let the cards fall as they may, every great tennis legend has had to work hard for their career, they have had fingers poited at them while they were playing, just look at Lendl as an example. Look how he was viewed while he played compared to how he is viewed now. Andy Murray is not going away, he will not drop his focus, he will not give up and he most certainly not quit fighting for every point from now until he finally hangs up his really crappy trainers.

.. and all the other Finals before too. But that's okay because I'm in it for the long run.

Nice post Gnome, but you should just ignore trolls. Not worth the energy getting het up over. It's just white noise.

I do my best to ignore the trolls like RF of Enfield who seems to be entrenched in the Andy Murray comments section of the Daily wail, and it is getting easier to do so, it just angers me how people can be so overly critical of somebody who has done nothing to warrant such hatred

Here's something to cheer you all up...I went to work expecting my anti-Murray colleagues to rejoice in his loss and yet, completely unprovoked one of them turns around says ' he might not have won but he knocked Fedderer out and thats good enough for me, I used to be a Fedderer fan but not since I realised how smug he truly is!'  LOVE IT!!!!!

I don't feel anywhere near as heartbroken as I did after Wimbledon. I have complete faith that he'll win more; sometimes Djok will beat him, and sometimes he'll beat Djok. No worries. I am SO GLAD he beat SmugFed as well; I'll take that. I feel like Djok is a worthy opponent as I genuinely like him and much as I want Andy to win EVERYTHING, I can cope with this. Wimbledon has to be the main target this year and I think he has an excellent chance.

So glad you mentioned the crappy trainers.  It seems incredible to me that a multinational sportswear company like Adidas can't produce more feet-friendly shoes.

I don't feel down at all about this loss.  In fact I had no expectations of a win here - not only because no player since Lew Hoad in 1956 has won their second Slam immediately after their first (although I understand that Andy has the distinction of having reached the final of his next one), but because I believe that Andy is still very much a work in progress.  He has come on by leaps and bounds since taking Lendl on board, and the improvements are very evident, not least his greatly improved mental strength and attitude, but more things still have to be worked on and it would have been unrealistic to have expected everything to come together in such a relatively short space of time.  The fact that he did beat Djokovic in New York and then went on to beat Federer in a Slam for the first time here is good enough for me for the moment.

From Jonathan Overend's article - "Djokovic win over Murray proves tennis stars are only human" - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/21236060

..... As for Murray, the progress he's made in the last six months is so glaringly obvious that there's no need for the mood to be anything other than upbeat. A first Wimbledon final, Olympic Gold, a first US Open title and a third Australian Final is a fine return for six months work. What amazing things he is doing! The abuse he continues to receive (in thankfully ever diminishing circles) sounds more and more embarrassing and misplaced.

Sitting in the press conference chair in the early hours of Monday, he judged this mood perfectly. Disappointed, for sure, but not despondent. Sometimes, on these occasions, we need to tip-toe around with our microphones, not really knowing what to say, but this was different.

He takes heart from Melbourne with a five set semi-final success over Federer, his first win over the Swiss Master at a Grand Slam, his immediate, positive response to losing the two tiebreaks in that match, and the fact he felt comfortable and relaxed on the big occasion - blatantly not the case in the past.

Most international analysts suggest that Murray is now the second best player in the world. The rankings don't show it yet but it's surely only a matter of time before they do.

So it seems that some of the trolls are seeing this loss as a golden opportunity to crawl out from under their stones?  Well good for them because it's clear that they have no appreciation at all of what it takes a player to win a Slam.  In fact it's debatable if they have an appreciation of anything above their navels, so the best course of action it to ignore them completely and leave them alone to get on with their miserable empty lives.

Well said.

I think the trolls are now just embarrassing themselves over their comments, whereas before most anti Murray comments would start a lengthy thread with all and sundry joining in, now its more a case of people jumping to his defence which I think is a sure sign of his increased popularity.

Ironically, he seems to be more popular for beating Federer in a slam than he was for winning the US

Is Andy off to the US yet? Or is he holidaying in Auz for a bit? Anyone know?

Well, according to Judy's twitter, and the tennis journos that went to the AO,they flew back to the UK the other day.I'm guessing Andy and Kim did too,as they all flew back together after the USO,and it was said in a couple of interviews that he planned to head back to England for a bit before resuming training with Lendl.

I'm sure Andy said he'd be spending a week at home, during which time he'd be seeing Ross.  I wish he'd give himself a little longer though because he works hard enough as it is.

I think Andy needs to make one of the slams his own, the other 3 have all done particularly well in one of the slam compared to the others - obviouly Rafa and the FO, Djoko with the AO and Federer with Wimbledon (although that is pushing it a bit considering he has also done well in the AO and USO)

Wimbledon would be nice, but i suspect that the USO may be Andy's ticket to multiple slam nirvana
