Doesn't Monaco count as one? He will still have Basel or Valencia and Tokyo or Beijing.

I think he'll just play in Tokyo. After entering and then pulling out of Basel the last two years, I'd be surprised if he signs up there again (or Valencia).

I've gone blank with dates and such, but how soon is Tokyo to the Davis Cup tie Andy has said he will play?

The Davis Cup is from 13-15 September and Tokyo starts on 30 September, so there's a couple of weeks between them which should be ok. But if (and hopefully he will) Andy gets to the US Open final, it's going to be really difficult for him to give his best at the Davis Cup tie, especially with it being on clay.

Thanks for that. I'd just got confused.
I hate to say it, but I almost wish he would pull out of that tie, but I imagine he might be even more keen to play now, to help lift the team.

Accumulated points for all Davis Cup play over the preceding 52-week period will count as one result and form part of the ATP World Tour 500 category, the best of which count towards a player’s ranking.
If this is the case, he might not even have to play Tokyo?

Depends what position he's in maybe, he might still try to make a push for no. 1 if he's close to it.

Yes I also think he'll be keen to play - to help out Leon especially, as he's been very supportive of him. At least if Andy won the US Open again, he wouldn't be so emotionally exhausted this time, but it'd still be tough coming out to play the next week. It wouldn't be so bad if it was on a hardcourt, but the change to clay always takes time for Andy anyway.

Do they get points for the playoff ties? I thought it was just the World Group ties that awarded points, which I've always thought is a bit unfair.

Just can't see Andy playing Davis Cup - unless/maybe he exits USO early. What would be the point anyway. GB don't really belong in the World Group and, even if Andy got them there, he'd have to keep playing every Tie to keep them there.

I agree - at the moment the team's just not strong enough to stay in the World Group without Andy. While Dan Evans and James Ward have done very well to get GB into the position of a playoff, they'd find it very tough going against the World Group teams. Teams definitely need more than one top-ranked singles player to succeed there. It's why Spain are so successful - though even they struggled this year when their top 4 didn't play the first tie.

You get 5 points for each world group playoff win, hardly significant for Andy.

Yeah thinking the same.... I just dont see the point of Andy playing that. It will be a clay court and he will have had little time to transition to that surface. What are the odds on Andy getting a serious injury ruining his chances in the short term? For what? So the LTA can temporarily fool the nation that Britain has any mens tennis talent other than Andy? GB do not belong in the top tier... as soon as Andy withdraws ( Which he will have to mostly) they will lose heavily to any top tier side. Utterly pointless IMO.

I wonder if he might be tempted to be a late entrant to the Citi Open in Washington at the end of this month.

It would be nice to see Andy use it as a warm up for the Masters after his training block in Miami, but I think it is too close to the Rogers Cup. If he went deep to the final, the Rogers Cup starts on the Monday. I guess Andy will get a bye in the first round so some hard court experience at Citi would do him good.
