Wimbledon 2016 Final: Andy Murray vs Milos Raonic

Didn't know where to put this, but I wanted to know what people think about Andy going to Rio? Lots of athletes have withdrawn and personally I wouldn't mind at all if Andy followed suit. I know he may feel he'd be letting his country down if he didn't play, but he did win the gold for Britain last time and is it really worth that risk?

I've heard it's because he has a superstition that not shaving during matches will bring him luck, but according to Andy it's because he just can't be bothered shaving - something I can well believe!

Maybe it's a Samson thing?  Actually quite a few players seem to adopt the scruffy look - with a few notable exceptions such as Federer and Raonic. Even immaculate Djokovic often succumbs to five-o-clock shadow.

So, a couple of days on now since the win - what are people's recollections of watching the match?

My main feelings during it were a mix of tension but also a sense of liberation from another Andy-Novak encounter. Raonic is often dull with his serving of course, but it was good to see a different match-up.

I think the point I'll remember most is the huge cross court forehand to make it 5-0 in the final tie-break.

I don't think Andy has anything to worry about, I believe the tennis will be played indoors ie. indoor hard. So his training will also be indoors. So unless he gets stung on the way to or from his hotel he should be fine.

I am a massive F1 fan (Lewis) as well so I flitted between the two events which ran concurrently, By the time the podium celebrations was over our Andy was two sets up so no pressure on watching him finish Milos off! Double good week-end. I don't worry over Lewis during a race like I do with Andy. Lewis is more like a Djokovic of F1.

I think the prospect of winning a doubles gold with Jamie is possibly his biggest incentive. Most of the high profile withdrawals have been among the golfers - you can see why as that must be one of the least controllable environment for mosquitos.

1) A golden chance to add to Andy's medal collections
2) The Zika virus is risky. What happens if Andy is bitten by the virus carrier ?
I think it is risky. I personally wouldn't take the risk but then again the Olympic only comes every 4 years. This is Andy's best chance of winning the gold medal whilst he is at his peak so why waste this rare opportunity.

I watched the whole match from beginning to end.  My main recollection was how well focused Andy was during the match.  Andy was consistently hitting deep to both wings. Andy had a high 70% first serve percentage in the first set, winning 86% of first serves in the whole match.  Andy played with lots of varieties, hitting hard, slicing the balls, dipping the return at Raonic charging in feet, lobbing the tall guy a few times but very few drop shots, preferring to test the slower guy lateral movement on both wings when the latter came in.

Andy was very sharp returning most of Raonic services including winning vs a 147 mph thunderbolt !

Raonic played very well restricting Andy to only 1 break in 7 BPs. Andy was in good control of his emotion, not getting frustrated, staying focused.  The only time Andy got a bit frustrated was just after Andy won the second set tie break when he directed a few choicest ($%#!) words at his team box to ask them to increase their level of vocal support.

I was most impressed with how Andy raised his intensity in the tiebreaks racing away to 6-1 and 5-0 in both tie breaks and not losing a single point on serve.

Andy was in control the whole match, with only a slight hiccup in one service game in the third set when Andy energy was a bit low and was 15-40 down offering 2 BPs which Andy quickly slammed the door shut.  Andy was constantly threatening the Raonic serve although never quite managed to break through the guy apart from the only break in the first set and the two tie breaks where Andy raised his level to God like intensity and focus.  His iron will ("I am not going to lose this") was very much in evidence.

Why do you think the Olympics are being played on indoor hard? All the photos I have seen of the Olympic tennis centre are of outdoor hard courts.

They've made the slightly questionable choice to play it on GreenSet rather than DecoTurf.

Andy said he'd be staying in an apartment with his team. I'm sure they'll do research to stay in an area where there is less risk.

I think the Zika risk is extremely minimal. The golfers who are pulling out seem to be using the Zika virus as an excuse, when the real reason is that they are focusing on the remaining majors and Ryder Cup which are all packed into a small period.

Your right it is 'outdoor hard court', I've checked with the ATP website. Don't know where I got the inside from it was some time ago.

Apparently the golf course has been built on swamp land which, of course, makes it more likely to be dangerous.

My brother, who's a journalist who recently wrote a book about Brazil and has spent a ton of time there over the last four years, just got back from spending a couple of weeks in Rio and several other (urban) places and said that since it's winter the mosquitoes are minimal and they had no trouble in any of the areas they were in at all. Not bitten.

That's good to know! Thanks!

Not being a follower of golf I don't know which of the two theories apply, although the BBC are promoting the second one, as is Rory McIlroy.  The whole point though is that the Zika virus does not cause a serious illness, in fact I understand people can have it but just feel a bit under the weather for a few days, but that said, people who pick it up but don't feel unwell can still carry it and pass it on to others, the main danger being to pregnant women because it has been linked to birth deformities.  I certainly can't see Andy wanting to miss the Olympics, particularly the chance to win gold with Jamie, although he says he'll take medical advice again nearer the time.

Thanks for the reassurance Tamara, something which is now being backed up by the WHO.
