Wimbledon MD R1: A Murray/J Murray vs R Hijikata/J Peers

Quote

Hijikata and Peers are currently ranked 50th and 51st in doubles respectively.

35 year old John Peers was Jamie’s doubles partner between 2013 and 2015, and the pair reached the Wimbledon final together nine years ago.

Peers, who was previously the world No 2, won the Australian Open men’s doubles title in 2017 with Henri Kontinen and claimed bronze at the Tokyo Olympics with Ash Barty in mixed doubles.  Rinky Hijikata, 23, partnered Jason Kubler in winning the Australian Open doubles in 2023.

Jamie is a seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion (five in mixed doubles and two in men's doubles partnering Bruno Soares), and a former doubles world No. 1.

The Murray brothers have won two trophies as a pair, the Valencia Open back in 2010 and the Japan Open in 2011.  They last played together on the Tour at the Citi Open in Washington in 2019 where they reached the quarter-finals before narrowly losing to Venus/Klaasen.

The match will be the third on CC today.  It will follow Djokovic’s match against British wildcard Jacob Fearnley and then Iga Swiatek against Petra Martic.  With play starting at 1:30pm, the Murrays could expect to be on court at around 5pm should Djokovic and Swiatek earn quick wins.

Djokovic match has rather unexpectedly just gone to a fourth set, so can't see this match starting before 6.

I thought Fearly played really well, I think he has a future. I was rooting for him. Too bad Draper has to play Norrie so early in the slam. I don’t know which is the higher ranked.

I think Fearnley has too.  Draper is now higher ranked than Norrie, and so is the current British No. 1.

And the good news is Andrew Castle is commentating on the Draper/Norrie match!

They're taking their time before coming on court.  Can see Andy and Jamie waiting inside  but not the other two.
