WTF 2016 Final: Andy Murray vs Novak Djokovic

Quote

I might be wrong but Andy is on a mission and it is only to end when he wins todays match. He is not gone to tell anyone how he feels but he is not as tired as people think.I thought yesterday he was going to lose but look what happened such determination to get to the end with a win. This iscwhat he trains for in the Grand Salems best of 5 sets he gas haad to go the full strengthh there. Nole will come out the rested player but he has not had to fight for his wins that may be the downfall.Andy must serve well today.Nole has a problem with his serve. I just hope Andy will win. At least he knows a long rest is ahead and he has an excellent team around him to get him fit.

Wot - no naked Andy this time?  Very Happy

nah Couldn't believe serious Djokovic brought that up. Andy doesn't need to rip his shirt off when winning a tennis match. Whistle

Thanks atl.    I think the way Andy played on Friday showed how well he had recovered after Wednesday.  But not only has Novak had a jammy draw compared with Andy's he also had the advantage of a day off between the RR and the SF. Andy will have had to play 3 days in a row, with one of those matches more like one played in a slam.
He clearly wasn't playing his best yesterday. And it's all very well for back seat drivers to say he should have finished points off faster yesterday but that can be easier said than done and it's a strategy that can go wrong as we saw sometimes when he tried to.
I have to admit that to win tonight does feel a bit like mission impossible even for mr 'f***ing big heart' as really everything has been stacked against Andy this week.  I'd love to be proved wrong but if he loses I don't think it says anything about their relative strength at present.   Like Aileen, I'm confident he'll regain no 1 spot next year.  Of course those who know little about tennis and who don't like Andy will no doubt gloat that he could only hold on to the no 1 spot for a couple of weeks but let them.  We his fans know better just how much he has achieved.

Agreed.  As Andy has often said about situations in the past,  if he knew he could reach No 1 this year, even for 2 weeks, he would have signed up for it.

They say you have to make your own luck.  When we look back over his career Andy has certainly had to do that.

ESPN, in their wisdom, have allocated 1.5 hours in their schedule for this match. I hope they are totally wrong!

Hi, I’m new around here and this is my first post ever on this forum, but I thought I’d throw in my two cents.
For these reasons, I believe Andy may will beat Novak today.
1.   When he won Wimbledon the first time (and the US Open), he had a cause for which he was like a dog about a bone. He wouldn’t let go until he’d won it. After that his cause became to gradually ease his way to world #1 ranking. Now that he has it in the bag, he isn’t about to relinquish it so soon.
2.   By comparison, Novak only has pride and ego to protect, since he’s already had a generous stint as #1. So It’s a case of “Been there, done that” for him.
3.   Andy’s progress through tournament tennis has been like that of a tortoise compared to Novak the hare. While it has been slow, it has been sure, and, once having gained any ground, he won’t concede it easily. He’s also not the same player who played Novak even at RG.  He has steadily improved aspects of his game (such as his second serve) since then, whereas Novak’s progress has been blunted and he is leaning too much on his past performance to get him through.
4.   Andy’s back was giving him trouble in the past, that’s the only real reason he went through a dip in which he lost as many matches as he did to Nole. Until he had back surgery, the match up differential was small (about 11/8 to Nole). Now, however, his back only bothers him occasionally.
5.   As others have observed, he doesn’t look as tired as you’d expect, and he goes into the final with Nole as by far the better tested player.
6.   Sure, he will only have had 24 hours to rest and reset, but today will make 3 days on the trot of that kind of schedule. His body will have adjusted somewhat, so hopefully (assuming he hasn’t injured himself) it will be going now into overdrive and the endorphins will have kicked in. Plus it’s different when it’s the last match he has to play for 5 weeks (or whatever it is before the Australian Open). Like all great champions (Nole included), he will force himself to raise his level accordingly when it matters for the biggest events (as he did in 2015 Wimbledon final against Raonic).

Has anyone considered the thought that Andy mentioned the tiredness to play down his chances, and maybe give Novak a bit of false confidence?

I wondered that too.

My 'penny-worth' is to counter comparisons to RG and other slam finals.   This is not one of them. It is a three set match where if Andy wins the first, as he should, then he is halfway there. From then it is about being wary of the Novak 'mind games' keeping focus and belief and not going too negative as he tends to when there is a lot on the line.

I do not think that tiredness (physical or mental) will be a factor unless it goes to three sets.

Good point. That may well be the case. His recovery after his match with Nishikori to then play Wawrinka was remarkably swift.

Having Lendl around today could be key.

ST I think you could be right. The other evening I saw Delgado watching Nole.I thought that was interesting.Lendl is a very hard person, he will expect the best from Andy as he has got to the final. The crowd , Lendl and is team will help him through. When I was in Hong Kong working at these events Lendl use to push himself to the limit to win. This is why he chose Andy to work with because Andy has the same ethics, it is amazing to see.We must will him to win.He will have to be aware of Nole, s tactics if he is ahead.

Surely he's due a win over him in a big match isn't he? I guess something feels appropriate about the season ending with one final showdown between the top 2 players for the ranking.
