Emma Raducanu

I'm pleased she's going to play at RG and hope she does well.
Pretty ropey start in R1 against 17 year old world No,184 Linda Noskova.  Emma led 2-0 and 4-2 in the first set which she went on to lose 7-4 in the tiebreak.  Maybe she'll improve but, to be honest, watching Noskova, who won the Junior French Open last year, made me realise just how much Emma has to do to improve both her physical strength and her game.

Well she went a break down in the second set but won it 7-5.  Took the decider 6-1 as her opponent started to flag.  Experience over youth lol.

Plays Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus in round two.  Sasnovich's ranking has been as high as No.30 so this should be a better test of where Emma is.

For once Emma was the more experienced player, and it paid off in how she came back against an opponent who was blowing her away at times.

^ I was lucky enough to watch this and was most impressed by the apparent mental upgrade to get closer to the US Open version of Emma. Well worth a watch for those of you that missed it.

Determined sums up her approach. She was able to change the way she was playing to come to grips with a very talented 17 year old which itself was impressive in someone also still so young.

Well done, Emma.

Emma loses 6-3, 1-6, 1-6.  I watched the first set and half of the second until it got too painful.

This from Naomi Cavaday, tennis coach and BBC tennis correspondent -

"Hard to know what to make of it really - when we look at Raducanu's level it was excellent for the large part of the match, but there is a serious question-mark on this physicality issue.

She has to get used to the tour level day after day but she is not going deep into tournaments.

If I was in her team I would be questioning everything - is she being fuelled enough?

Are you fuelling for 45 minutes or for three hours? What is she taking on board in matches? That was a complete fade-away.

Hopefully there's no injury but from the tennis side I can see huge improvements."

It is an unusual situation - no other player's 'rookie' year on tour has been followed with this intensity. Ironically if she hadn't won the USO people would be saying how well she is doing, having won rounds at every slam etc.

But yes there definitely seems to be an issue with conditioning. Perhaps only more years on tour will truly sort that.

Maybe it would help too if she got herself a coach and a good fitness trainer, although the way she's dispensed with coaches in the past might make that a little difficult!

I agree it's a shame though the way things have worked out for her - all a bit in reverse really.

Sorry she lost but I suppose we always hope she'll win.  However she tries her best so there we are.

Total coaching shambles - and now she wants help from Jamie Delgado for the grass court season!

I remember we wondered if Jamie would be interested in coaching her following splitting with Shapovalov. Does he want to coach her?

We did, but if he's got any sense he'll give her a wide berth!  Seriously though, I have no idea yet what's happening between the two of them re the grass court season and maybe beyond.

Emma plays Viktorija Golubic today at approx 12.15pm.  The tournament is in Nottingham where Emma played last year. Golubic is from Switzerland and is 29 years old.  She is more experienced on grass than Emma, but Emma will have the benefit of the support of many British fans.
Good luck Emma Smile
(Andy plays at approx 11.30am in Stuttgart today too)

^ lol  So much for the support of fans - Emma retired injured, her third mid-match retirement since she won the USO.  In fact she's never won more than two matches at a tournament since then.

Oh dear so sorry, she's always so unlucky    shocking
Hopefully it's just a short term issue, she's due to play in Birmingham next week and Wimbledon very soon after.
