Emma was born in Toronto, Canada, on 13 November 2002 to a Romanian father and a Chinese mother, her family moving to the UK when she was two.   She started playing tennis at the age of five at the Bromley Tennis Academy in London.  Her idols are Li Na and Simona Halep.

Coached by Nigel Sears. she has won three singles titles on the ITF Circuit but played no tournaments for 16 months after February 2020 due to the covid pandemic and the fact that she was studying for her A-levels which she sat this year, although she did play at the Battle of the Brits which was held in the late summer.

In June she received a wild card for the Nottingham Open where she lost to Harriet Dart in straight sets in round 1 before making the quarter-finals of a lower-level tournament at the same venue the following week.  Thanks to this success she was offered a wild card into the main draw at Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round becoming, at 18 years and 239 days old, the youngest British woman to reach the last 16 in the open era and also guaranteeing a top 200 in WTA rankings, having been at No. 338 at the start of the tournament.

Emma's round 4 opponent is world No. 75 Ajla Tomljanovic who defeated Jelena Ostapenko in three sets after an on-court row in which Tomljanovic accused Ostapneko of faking injury in order to have a MTO when trailing 4-0 in the deciding set.

Hopefully  she is in the bubble of Wimbledon and ignoring all the hype. Her next opponent is ranking lower than the last two she defeated , but it does not always work like that, weight of expectations etc. If she wins the next match would be fab for her.
 I dont see her getting through  to final etc, that would be to Much to ask

I hope the same Tennispark and also agree with the rest of your post because she's done extremely well just getting to the fourth round, so anything else will be a bonus.

She's a very good player with a good backhand.  I don't think she'll be too stressed about her R4 match, but I couldn't be sure if she'll win, but it would definitely be a bonus if she could win.

She has possibly had some advantage from Covid19 as she hasn't been able to play all that much - she has had one or two injuries but they've had time to heal.  Also she's done some press conferences through Zoom, she hasn't had to face the press in a press setting which would have been a help to her.

She has come into the limelight at Wimbledon and I hope she can continue her run, but she has a long way to go really, this time next year it'll be more clear regarding her success.

It's good to see her and I wish her lots of luck.

I also agree.  The media are often quick to put young sports stars with great potential on pedestals and they are also known for knocking them off for the slightest thing that doesn’t fit their agenda.   She seems quite grounded and hopefully her family will keep her that way.

While she does seem quite mature for her age, my one is concern is that she says that her parents are 'pushy' and that all her life they've pushed her (she's an only child) to succeed at everything be it sport or academically.  It was they who decided that she should take up tennis as her career.  She says she isn't bothered, but while that might the case now it might not be the case three or four years down the line, particularly if she hasn't achieved anything of note by then, especially winning a Slam. She's already had injury problems too which the 16 month break helped to heal, but her body is still growing so if pushed too much she could end up with more.  I don't know if she has a fitness coach, but if not I think it's time she got one, and one who's used to dealing with teenagers and young adults.


Incidentally, I thought her current coach was Matt James, but he only coached her for two years from 2015 before taking up an appointment with the LTA, so her full-time coach is Nigel Sears whose services are paid for by the LTA as part of the teenager’s Pro Scholarship Programme support for the best 16-24-year-olds.  I've amended the intro accordingly,

Rather a sad end to her Wimbledon run, which was painful to watch, although I'm not really surprised given that she isn't used to playing at this level.  In fact it probably wasn't a good idea of the organisers to give her a wild card into the main draw.  Too much too soon plus all the hype and levels of expectation placed on her young shoulders was almost certain to catch up with her at some point.

Her ranking goes up to 175, which might be some consolation, although how long it'll stay there remains to be seen.

Meanwhile I hope she takes a long rest to enable her to fully recover.

Emma needs to follow her own line of thought, if she's happy playing tennis then she should continue.  A career in tennis might sound the best thing since sliced bread, but if she plays on the WTA she'll have to accept many months of training, travelling and tournaments.  It isn't easy to reach the top of tennis, and to stay there.

I'm sorry she had to retire from her match yesterday.  She has achieved a great deal and most of us will remember her name during the coming year.

It's great that she's now ranked 175 and that she has earned so much prize money.  I think she said she hoped to use some of the prize money in looking for another or additional coaching - she knows coaching is very expensive.

Emma didn’t do a press conference but Wimbledon announced she did have difficulty breathing.   I hope the media leave her alone to take stock of the last week or so.

I hope so too.   According to her father the breathing difficulty was due to the stress of continually having to play at such a high level, something I can well believe.
