Just cannot work out why players cannot see where they are going wrong.
Emma has an old Andy problem of not playing deep enough to the opponent. Pegula is on the baseline so all those short length returns are right in the hitting zone. Nearly every time Emma hits longer Pegula cannot get her swing right and most times it goes into the net. Elementary stuff.
A couple of satisfying results this week for her which should help her at the US Open so she is making progress now after a rather shaky year.

Pegula was playing much better than any of Emma's opponents at the USO last year, so a good experience to have compete at that level.

^ I note that with the loss of US Open points, if and when that happens, Emma will likely just hold on as the British no.1 female player. That is of course not necessarily the case if Harriet Dart progresses deep into the tournament.
I do not think that many of us expect Emma to get too far this tournament and playing Alize Cornet in the first round is a hard start. However, I wish her well. Her skill level seems to improve with every match played. Not so certain about the mental determination and adaptabiity needed in her game to win.

Looking at the draw, I expect Emma is thinking - 'this being a high seed thing is overrated' ! Could not have handpicked a harder route.

True what she says on the near irrelevance of seedings in the womens game. There are barely any players getting to the latest stages of tournaments on a consistent basis.

^ A strange report from The Telegraph as it did not really sum up a well won match against extremely powerful hitting from Yastremska. There was some good sequences from Emma and her strategy, although perhaps a little naive was successful. I think being just two points away from a win it was a pity to be recorded as a retirement by her opponent.

It's my fault. I tuned in for a few minutes when she was serving for the first set - she then lost four set points, then lost the set whilst hobbling and then called the trainer!
