Emma Raducanu

Lulu Son had a surprise win against Emma this afternoon.  6-2 5-7 6-2.  She’s come through qualifying just like Emma did in New York.   I didn’t see much of the match.  Emma have a fall at some point.

At least she's got to R2 of the Korea Open, defeating Peyton Stearns, currently ranked No. 48, 7-6(4), 7-6(5) - but as I didn't watch the match the match, can't comment.

Sounds like a pretty dire match, but a win is the main thing

Emma vs Yue Yuan - Emma won 6-4, 6-3.  Fairly impressive performance but it took her 7 MPs to close the match out.

I am sure that there are many of you that thought that
anxiety watching had gone away when Andy retired. No such luck, welcome to our replacement Emma! I watched it all and was so pleased that eventually she controlled her demons and won through. You could see the ability if not any consistency. Needs one more win for top fifty which is where she should be imo.

Althusser, the match contained a lot of good but with many pauses with a lot of errors for both.

Thanks MA, a quarter final place - decent week's work so far...

Althusser, I think so too.

She has, I think, received poor treatment  from many for being young and sometimes perhaps not making correct choices and not becoming a top ten star directly after her US Open win so I am pleased when she enjoys playing again (it showed) and wins a little more.

It is always hard to explain the link for competitive, often self critical, sporting people between enjoying a sport and winning.  These are generally people who can never accept the mantra that just taking part is the more important aspect of doing a sport. It was some of my generation that tried to tell my children when they lost that they came 2nd! I do not think they had much chance suggesting that to them with a father like me!

I really don't think that tennis is the right sport for her because her physique doesn't seem to be suited to it.  She has been offered a place at Oxford, and I think she should take it up, then she could play tennis,  or another sport of her choosing, as a hobby.

Aileen,

It has not been a year since she restarted after those surgeries. Look at the recovery tiimes for others. It is a tough ask to get over such things quickly and there will be setbacks. I understand why you may feel frustrated that she is not participating to a standard that the tennis followers would like but top level sport involvement is usually a short experience and she should be supported before her opportunity is lost.

I watched the Russian sisters play before doing a Parkrun today ( the match before Emma) and the younger one was so bad I wondered why she was still playing. If it is what someone wants then we should support their best efforts. I know that Emma wanted to play in three events on the Asian swing intentionally to test her physical resilience and she must now decide if to follow that through with a patched up foot.  The next one I thought involved qualifying so a good opportunity to cut there so she can try again later.
When she is in physically good working order her play can be brilliant. Today the crowd stayed away until her match. There are a lot of people out there, around the world, that enjoy watching her play and she enjoys doing that for them. She needs less help from us and be allowed to work things out for herself. With early success the learning curve for the experience she needs is a struggle ! I am confident she will be successful.
