The Other British Men

There never seems a be a reason given so naturally the sceptics have their opinions. He did pick up a knee injury, forcing him to retire, two months back, so it's not impossible that it's still bothering him (especially given recent results). But who knows. Constant last minute withdrawals with no explanation given is not exactly helping his rep.

Peter Torebko ended up winning in Newcastle beating Hewitt in the final - he beat Edmund, Pauffley and Hewitt in successive rounds. Former top 200 player on his favoured surface, and by the sounds of it was in very good form.

Some good points for Pauffley and Hewitt.

Meanwhile RE Bedene - he says he's always been a fan of this country and enjoys living here, but has no idea what the citizenship process involves and is currently just focusing on recovering from a wrist injury and getting back in the top 100.

Dan Smethurst is going to need his own thread at this rate. This morning he clocked up his 40th win of the season, thrashing former top 50 player Karol Beck 6-2, 6-0 in the Busan Challenger event.

Meanwhile Edmund upset top 100 player Dustin Brown (Kyle's second top 100 scalp after beating De Schepper last year) and James Ward upset Andreas Beck - both in the Heilbronn Challenger event. Two fantastic wins there against higher-ranked Germans on home soil. Both of these wins have been mentioned elsewhere however.

Not a lot of British interest in Futures this week but I'll update if any of the Brits go deep.

What the hell is wrong with Dan these days? Hes doing a lot of withdrawing.

Knee injury. Played one round last week or week before and it flared mid match (which he lost).  Don't know but perhaps he will wait and rest for grass season.  Well it worked for Andy.  Lol.

Update from last week:

There were titles for Dave Rice and Alex Ward, both of whom beat fellow Brits en-route in the semi-finals. Dave was defending two titles this month so that's at least some of the points saved. Alex continues to climb back up the rankings after missing the first few months of the season through injury.

In the semi-finals Alex actually edged Ashley Hewitt in a really tight match which went to a third set tie-breaker.

Dave also came through a very close match with a Brit in his semi-final - he came from *3-5, match point down to beat Cam Norrie 7-5 in the third. A good week for young Cameron, who is off to college in September, but a heart-breaking defeat.

Meanwhile Jonny O'Mara - who has struggled for fitness this year due to constant niggly injuries - finally made a breakthrough, reaching the semi-finals in Croatia. Those 6 points should give him a little boost.

Lots of Brits to keep an eye on this week with the Nottingham Challenger - although - apart from Dan Cox and Evans, who play each other - they've all drawn seeds!

Marcus Willis was the only Brit to come through qualifying - but there were impressive wins for Josh Milton, Brydan Klein and Ed Corrie (who beat two of the world's best teenagers in Borna Coric and Theo Kokkinakis en-route). Unfortunately with three rounds of qualifying and only ranking points for those to actually qualify, they come away with nothing.

First round draw (shamelessly stolen from Steven/GBTennis over on British-Tennis.net):

L32: (Q) Marcus Willis WR 339 v (1) Igor Sijsling (NED) WR 55 (CH 52 in Feb)
L32: (WC) Kyle Edmund WR 295 v (8) Dudi Sela (ISR) WR 110 (CH 29 in 2009)
L32: (WC) Dave Rice WR 313 v (5) Kenny de Schepper (FRA) WR 72 (CH 62 in Apr)
L32: (WC) Dan Smethurst WR 244 v (6) Matthew Edben (AUS) WR 73 (CH 61 in 2012)
L32: Dan Evans WR 134 v (WC) Dan Cox WR 225
L32: James Ward WR 168 v (2) Steve Johnson (USA) WR 64 (= CH)

Meanwhile Josh Ward-Hibbert, Cam Norrie and Rob Carter are all seeded in a very weak Israeli Futures. Harry Meehan is also playing there.

A disappointing day for the Brits with only Evans winning (against Cox), after Kyle had lost his match a few days ago. Smethurst actually ended up playing the lucky loser Kutrovsky, but unfortunately had to play with a heavy cold.

In Israel, Meehan (to a seed) and Carter (to a qualifier) both lost in R2.

Ward-Hibbert and Norrie both made the QFs where they played each other, and it was Norrie who won - in straight sets.

Norrie goes off to college soon (I think I mentioend it before) which is a shame as he's showing some good form right now. Second successive semi-final and a fair chance at going further.

Norrie went on to make the final, but unfortunately had to retire down a set and a break.

Still, a career tournament for him and a handy 10 points to boot.

- - -

A lot of Brits played Queens qualies this week but unsurprisingly none made it to the FQR (point scoring round) - despite the usual close-run affairs.

Also a fair few Brits in action in the second Nottingham challenger, and the same four Brits above (Norrie, Ward-Hibbert, Carter and Meehan) in action in another Futures.

Missed the match apart from the final set TB, but a good win for Dan Evans!

I see Ward got through his match too.

And out goes Dan. Saw him beaten by JMDP last year. Really finds it hard against these tall big servers. It's a shame. I think Dan needs positive feed back to keep going.

Bad luck, Wardy - he played a great first set there and lost it so narrowly.
