Neither would I, just type in 'msconfig' in Run and stop all the stuff you don't need to start-up.
But I will say, Andrew's recommended program is very interesting for the analytic side.

I would hit that so hard right now. Looks like a bargain too! Stick to Sonys!

The one up there would make a top notch studenty laptop!
3GB+ RAM, dual processor, 260GB+ hard drive and then stuff like whether battery life or screen size is important to you.
I think you will find that Acers tend to be a little more powerful in that price range (e.g. mine is 4GB RAM and bought it 18 months ago) but the hardware is a piece of shit. It infuriates me to even talk about it.

Yeah, that's what worries me. Laptops tend to fizz out. I use the computer too much. Must stop that.

Email from Dell saying my system has been completed and is now ready for shipping to NZ. Should now arrive by 22nd Feb, a week before it said originally.

Spooky! I thought about you and your new laptop today, right after seeing the DELL advert on tv
I hope it serves you well

Very happy with the computer and fully recommend it to everyone. Looks nice, runs smoothly, feels pretty solid etc.
And now my Ipod, which was bought around the same time as my previous laptop, has proceeded to pack up at the same time. Was using it as a hard drive to transfer stuff over from the old laptop and must have overworked it a bit much.
Took it to an Apple store service department and they said it needs a new hard drive and referred me to an Ipod repair company called Idoctor NZ. Was surprised they don't do it themselves. From my descpription of what's going on Idoctor reckon it's the logic board rather than hard drive, and if so it would cost $120 to replace. But I'd have to courier it to them in Auckland for a "free diagnosis" then decide what to do.
Not sure it's worth spending over a quarter of the price of a new one for one that's over 3 years old to be opened up and messed around with then something else go wrong in a few weeks. Also not sure I want to post it away to some company I've never heard of who don't even provide a phone number or email address, just an address to send it to and a website with a contact form. Probably just ask family for early birthday money and get a new one.

Glad the computer is working well for you. Idoctor sounds like a dodgy backstreet set up
and you might be better off getting a new one.

Mark - I've just installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1. No problems with that, but since the installation there's a message on the bottom RH corner of the desktop saying "Windows 7. Build 7601" and telling me that this version of Windows 7 isn't genuine. Also when I boot up all I get is a black screen with another message telling me the same thing.
That most certainly isn't the case because it was installed by a perfectly reputable computer firm. From the Microsoft website I see that other people have had this problem but nobody seems to know what to do about it. I've tried validation but the message I'm getting is that this had been interrupted.
It doesn't seem to be affecting the computer in any way, apart from being unable to get a desktop picture, but I'm not happy about this. Is there anything I can do to sort it out?

My sister wants to buy a computer just for surfing the net and emails ect. She's never had one before. She'll want a good make but it won't have to have much in the way of features. Would a 'netbook' do this? I'm totally ignorant about this kind of thing. I'd appreciate advice from all you technogurus out there........and anyone else too!

Yes, a netbook would be perfectly fine and very cheap.
If you have the money, maybe even consider getting a tablet computer (iPad etc). There is a whole load of them coming out now, Motorola XOOM looks tasty.
