That's the problem with the distance. I can't help you out with these technical issues.
I am horrible with computers. I am terrified that I will **** something up.

Do Sony make good netbooks? There only seems one choice but the spec is too much, I don't need 250GB.

I ******* refuse to buy Acer after the hell I have had with my current laptop so I'm not sure what the other option could be... Dell?

Fully recommend Dell based on the first 6 weeks or so with this one. Have already got 2 people at work to order the same one after they saw mine delivered to me and kept asking me about it every day.
Had a nightmare experience with HP which was my first laptop, their customer service/repairs were appalling so would never go back to them (ie, replaced hard drive only lasted 3 weeks then died, after being replaced again the guy at the service centre was extremely rude and told me it can only have broken if i threw it around and dropped it etc when the only time it ever left my desk was to go there for the new hard drive). My 2nd one was Asus and was pretty good although perhaps some of their hardware wasn't the best quality - whole shell had to be replace when it disintegrated and the screen had to be replaced etc but pretty good customer service and included 2 year warranty.

Thanks Alex, I think I will opt for the one with the longest warranty as Acer are only 1 year. My screen went blank at 14 months in and then half my keys have stopped working at 16 months, so pathetic. They said it would cost £220 to repair the first issue which I told them to **** off for as I eventually got it done for £30 at a local shop but I'm fed up of hardware breaking even though the software has never ever froze, runs perfectly. Oh and my battery dies a few minutes after I unplug it from the power source... won't even bother fixing that.

Everyone will say different things about manufacturers.
I had a bad experience with Dell with the first desktop I ever had. You do save a bit of money on their laptops due to the fact they cut out the intermediaries in their supply chain, and the quality of their laptops does seem to have improved.

They seem to rate the Toshiba very highly, if you could get that in black or white, that would be a cracking buy.

I'm still inclined towards Acer.
I admit, my first Acer had poor built quality but then a few years later, my Dad got one and it was fantastic build quality, maybe they improved.

Think you'll find pretty much all come with just a 1 year manufacturer's warranty Julia, apart from Asus who give a 2 year global warranty on their stuff. It's always worth getting an extended warranty for another 2 years IMO as nothing should go wrong in the first year but often things start to break once you approach 18 months to 2 years. After 3 years it either dies, or it's out of date enough that it's time to replace.
My current Dell came with a 1 year warranty but I upgraded for 3 years. If it's getting very heavy use you'll almost certainly need repairs (new hard drive, keyboard etc) from 18 months to 3 years that would cost more than extending the warranty does so it's a no brainer IMO.
But like Andrew says, everyone will have different experiences with different brands. Most people I speak to say HP are the best, and the girlfriend has an excellent one of their's at the moment, but I wouldn't touch them because of my bad experience with them. My brother had a Toshiba that was finished reasonably quickly (about 2 years I think).

Think Sony and Samsung are turning out better laptops at this point in time.
