George, can't help you any further I'm afraid... if you screwed up on Gmail, you would have done something similar with any other email service out there eventually because Google is the best with usability, it really is meant to be idiot proof.
How you can manage to first delete 1000+ emails and then choose to delete them again from Trash is beyond me.
I think you'll just have to take this to the Google forums, good luck

You've got to be kidding me! And you are struggling to change your password?

Well I've only spent 30 minutes at it so far... I'll be most fascinated to see how it happens, nothing I've read so far works.

I notice that I’ve got 1160 email read-notifications on read-notify.com. I’m just wondering if they’ve got a copy of the emails as well as a record of the read-information.

George, I've even recorded you a video: <now removed>
Settings > Accounts > Google Account settings > Change password
And you, an experienced computer user, spent 30minutes on that?

The link doesn’t work. There’s a video on Google mail, but the instructions are wrong. It says if you click on Setting and then Account, but I don’t get Account I get Account-Import and then I don’t get a Change-Password option.

When they say Account, just like I did, we're talking about 'Accounts and Import'.... a bit of common sense, no?
So click 'Accounts and Import' > at the bottom is 'Google Account settings' > 'Change password'.
