Well... in the States, if you get 93% of the questions on an Exam correct, that's an A-. If you get 84% correct, that's a B-, and so on... I'm just not comprehending that you can get ONLY 70% of the questions on an Exam correct and still have an A...

lol

Well we just have different grade boundaries here... Wink

Your exams are, in my experience, easier. They're more fact based (at least the ones I sat) and ours are more essay and interpretation based. Could be wrong for SATS though.

Just me personally, I couldn't imagine being happy about a 70% grade...

That's because you have different examinations to us. Anyone who got a 90% + grade here would be amazingly talented

That, dear boy, is because you are American, and you've been trained into a different system. To get a first class degree over here you need a 70. Now, that's more a mark than a percent, and in arts subjects it is damned near impossible to get much over 75. In America, they bandy 80s and 90s around like they're going out of fashion...

Having said that, in England and Wales, up until we're about 16, then 90%s are perfectly attainable. (In fact, in some A Levels its not that hard to get 100%)

I'm sorry, just joking.  hug

Not sure what the boundaries are at Uni here. I don't think they are fixed. That is, if the highest grade achieved in some course was say 85%, that person might still get an A+ due to scaling etc.
But typically speaking, I believe about 80% is an A, and 92% is an A+.

Smile Well done Andrew. Enjoy your gap year, because you're going to go all out for a "First" at Uni aren't you?

:p then you wont worry about not reaching your expectations this time around.

Seriously, you did more than OK, so enjoy the break from studying.

Mr. Green LOL at the comments on American education! David, without being insulting, in my years of teaching, and with a fair few Americans attending ( I live near a US base) the standard of grades is way down on the kids I taught...dont know about grotty schools though.

Smile Conversely, I never had a kid who'd had a Scottish education who wasn't streets ahead of the English children. I'm a HUGE fan of the Scottish Education System.

All the Americans could talk a hell of a lot better than my pupils though. Very articulate. blink

It's all about positive culture. It's all part of the 'bigging up' thing. Giving someone less than 90% for being as good as the brightest of kids is unthinkable for American culture. However over here it's something about teaching us it's impossible to be perfect. We can always strive to acieve better. Or something like that. And as Laura says, it's nigh on impossible to get over 90% in anything above standard grade level so it's not that it's easier to get an A cause the marks are set lower. Just different.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Love it Dentie.

I worked in an Examining Board Offices when I was a student ( no gadding about the world in my day!! lol ) and, although it was long before GCSE's I've read some hilarious exam papers about how much the examinee should get for spelling their name correctly!

They then spent the rest of the time doodling or scrawling obscenities :P

My brother wrote an apology to the examiner for wasting his time at the end of his higher maths paper. Right enough he got a no award!
