Best all rounder would have to be a small tree which has lovely flowers, gorgeous foliage then lovely fruits that birdies love, a crab apple perhaps? In a small garden plants that give good value are a must eg repeat flowering rose.
cottage gardens are my favourite too, you are going to be envious but have daffs, violets and primroses out at the mo and crocuses trying.
Bourganvilia - such showy, gorgeous flowers. Have seen them growing outside on the I. of Wight, the climate is so mild.
