Getting to know you - one and all!

Quote

It depends who I'm talking too lol I don't have a distinct regional accent- I don't think but everyone agrees I sound Scottish and places me as such automatically Very Happy However, my manner of speaking is normally quite proper, my mum didn't want me sounding like I was from West Lothian because the accents are awful lol and that's coming from a Geordie Very Happy

My accent is similar to that. I say "huv" instead of pronouncing "have", but that's my only inflection that's noticeable to people, at least from different parts of Scotland. I certainly don't sound like I'm from Fife, or (heaven forbid) Dundee, despite being trapped between them!

But yeah, people can tell I am Scottish anyway. Irish is general is easy to pick up if you are around it long enough.

James can't say the word "world" or "kiss" correctly. Just saying.

Your Mum is right - the W Lothian accents are pretty dreadful, and their owners all seem to speak so quickly. Smile

Ah a fellow Fifer!  Well my Mum decided that my Fife accent had to be eradicated.  Probably hugely biased because she was a Glaswegian, although you'd never have known it from her rather "proper" Scottish accent.  Agree Dundee is the pits!  However Doric is the strangest - it's virtually a language all of its own

I understand Doric, and all its variations, perfectly, but don't speak it - so I suppose I can't be bilingual then ... Think

There has to be a term to describe this.  It's like I can understand quite a bit of French if they speak slowly, but I could never attempt to speak it.

Having been in NZ since age 7 I think I sound somewhere in between English and Kiwi. Definitely not full Kiwi like my brother (he was only 4 when we came here). At least, when I've been back in England I've never been asked where I was from but am never asked here either.

Certain words bring out each accent. For example, when I swear it sounds Kiwi for instance, particularly the word '****' for some reason. But when I get angry or frustrated and argue it sounds posh London like lol

Neil and Julia probably have an opinion having met me.

My accent is a mixture of 'polite' scots and irish.  My husband says when i'm annoyed or really angry it goes into full irish mode (he says its my rebellious irish blood surfacing! shocking)  Still trying to sell our house the market is very slow but we're keeping our fingers crossed although we are reducing the selling price in the hope that it moves soon pray

^ It's really nervewracking trying to sell property in this economic climate, Iris.  I keep thinking about taking the plunge, but as there's nothing spoiling, it seems sensible to wait until the market picks up.

Good luck!  thumb up

Well, I don't know about property where you two gals are, but the right property, in the right location here is selling in a blink!  I was chasing one down and there were 19 offers on it!  Staggering.  But, I have my fingers crossed for you Iris as I know that it is not easy to sell up sometimes.

^ It's funny isn't it.  There's a property in my street been for sale for like forever, and it's a nice area and a nice property.  Goodness knows...

Was just thinking about this thread and started wondering what everyone sounds like - apart from Mark & Andrew as we already know what they sound like.

So, starting with the originator, Jan, what do you sound like?
Hmm - I suppose I'm just boring English, no particular accent as I came from Kent. Can't even claim to anything Devon except for the odd Dartmoor/west Country phrase that slips in when I'm not thinking. Nothing like the lovely Scottish accents you all have I'm sure. I suppose we've got more used to the soft lilt of the islanders as we've spent so much time on Mull. Lovely sound - send shivers of delight down my spine - always made me feel 'Oh how lovely - we're back again!'
