Misplaced Gloating (a thread for word lovers)

You wouldn't want to be suffering from pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis though.

You're quite right, Aileen.    Think I'll stay away from volcanoes.

I don't know, but somebody even wrote a song about pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis -

Pneumono-
ultramicroscopicsilico-
volcanoconiosis I know
is hard to fit on just one row!

Lung disease
caused by dust that makes you want to sneeze.
Though it shows up in dictionairies,
it's probably meant whimsically.

Why the word's so long
I don't know, perhaps for show.
I just know it's wrong
how a word like that can grow -ow -ow -ow. . .

What a trick.
Nineteen syllables that just mean "sick."
It's a word you never can say quick.
But spelling it can be a kick.

If you spell it wrong
Who would know? For sure, not me!
Sometimes "-conio-"
is spelled with a "k" you see?

pneumono-
ultramicroscopicsilico-
volcanoconiosis I know
can make it hard, to suck or blow.

(but this song sure does, I know . . .)

Goodness me!

The biggest doors open to the smallest keys: "yes, thank you" and "if you please".

So thank you!

My favourite euphemism -

terminological inexactitude

Churchill first used it in a speech he gave to the House of Commons in 1906 to get round the fact that it was against House rules to accuse other MPs of telling an outright lie.

I like that one.

Woman to Churchill: If I was your wife I’d put poison in your coffee.

Churchill to Woman: If I was your husband, I’d drink it.

That's a good one too.

It was Lady Nancy Astor who said that! She was known for being acerbic! I was planning to post it, but too late!
