I might sound simplistic.. but when I came to Canada from a different country and slightly different culture, and was accepted by Canada to become a Canadian citizen to enjoy the liberties of healthcare, schooling, and a Canadian passport, it is obvious to me that I would respect the culture of the country I had chosen to live.

I have no issue with different cultures following and celebrating their special observances (hell.. we celebrate Rabbie Burns Day on 25th!) but I find it offensive when our (Christian) culture has to be put aside in case of offending others.

It is ridiculous and a show of weakness from our so-called leaders to bow to this.

I wouldn't walk down a street wearing a strappy t-shirt and short skirt in Riyhad because I know it wouldn't be okay in their culture.. so why is it okay for Muslim women to be covered from top to bottom in our culture?

Bit late to start laying down the law isn't it you ******* buffoon. In 4 months, he'll have no power and will go back to being the aristocratic **** with a high opinion of himself. Sick of this fella we call our 'leader'.
At least you'll have the satisfaction of not voting for him come May.  Meanwhile be prepared to listen to more Election promises coming not only from him but the rest of that feeble lot.  I'll be voting SNP anyway because I want them to gain more seats at Westminster, which I think they have a very good chance of doing now.

No disrespect, but how does Canadian culture differ from what you left behind? I am very uncomfortable with conflating the way people dress with the actions of criminal lunatics. And doesn't Christianity preach loving your neighbour and turning the other cheek? I smell hypocrisy, big time.

And no disrespect to you either, fiverings.. The culture here (Toronto area) is very multicultural. A wee bit different from where I came from in Aberdeen, Scotland.

When I say "Christian" it's not that I am a practising Christian (that's been discussed in another old thread lol).. just that the major populace is Christian.

So, do you think I should be able to walk down a Riyhad street wearing my skimpy's?

Well that would be your choicet, and I personally think the Burqua is ugly and demeaning. But just as I don't confuse the IRA with catholicism, and i don't like many aspects of catholic teaching, i don't universally condemn it as evil.

Well.. I don't think I'd have a choice. At best, I'd probably have some distasteful looks and comments.. and at worst, I could be arrested.

And I don't condemn any religion to be evil. But I do find organised religions to be controlling.

It is much easier to separate the IRA from catholicism than to separate Muslim terrorists from Islam.   They were fighting on political grounds and were not avenging Christ.    I'm with Scot on this.   I think "when in Rome" is not unreasonable.

Guess what?

Yep you guessed it.

Yet another terrorist attack. An unnamed Slovenian man has detonated a bomb in Fiumicino Airport, the largest airport in Italy. No confirmation or reports of any injuries/casualties just yet.

EDIT: It was a controlled explosion on the runway by security staff. No casualties and the man has been arrested.

Meanwhile I don't know what the British are doing circulating an English version of Charlie, due out on Friday, complete with its controversial front cover.  All this is going to do is to offend Muslims generally in this country.  Muslim leaders have called for calm and tolerance, but it does seem to be inviting trouble that we simply don't need.  I'm all in favour of freedom of the press, but feel that this is just a step too far.

Yes, a lot of over-reaction. It's the modern malaise of trend-herding. Everyone needs to be personally involved in everything, without actually achieving anything other than a smug glow. Meanwhile all these lost girls in Nigeria are all but forgotten.

I agree-the staff of these papers have families who will be worried sick for their safety. And as you say, meanwhile in Nigeria...

Aileen @10.12pm
I'm not sure they are circulating an "English version." My understanding is newsagents in parts of GB, eg London, where there are large numbers of French people, are selling French Charlie.
A newsagent from Brixton, who will be selling the magazine, was interviewed last night and said there'd been huge interest mainly  from French people in the area.
He also said he wouldn't be displaying the cover because there are also a large number of Muslims in the area too.

The "survivors issue", as the magazine calls it, is available in six languages including English, Arabic and Turkish. Proceeds are going to victims' families.

The whole thing is appalling.

1500 issues of Charlie Hebdo will be distributed in Canada tomorrow (most already pre-bought and sold out.) They're usually only available in Toronto and Quebec, but they will be spread out to the east and west coast of Canada this time.

They're selling for hundreds of dollars on e-bay, and t-shirts are being made.
