Pokémon Go

A quick summary on the new FREEmium game Pokémon Go.

Started playing on 15/7/16, 4 days ago.  The game has been fun. The last two days, we have been going out around the house (near Paris) and caught quite a few different types of Pokemon.  The most fun part is that I discovered the surrounding area around here which I never realised from visiting this place for 20 years ! Unfortunately the weather has been really hot so i have been roasting slowly ! I have walked over 10km to hatch eggs (1 infinite incubator given) into new pokemons. The exploration / exercise aspect of this game is certainly fun.  I also enjoyed helping each other build our Pokemon set. Whilst one person was capturing a Pokemon, the other person was keeping an eye out for passerby.

The typical exploration is to find Poke Stops to pick up Poke Balls to capture Pokemons, as well as Potions (healing), berries (to make capturing easier), Lure to place in Poke Stops to increase the rate of rarer Pokemon spawning, lucky egg (level 9, double XP), greater ball (level 12), ultra ball (level 20).

Random pokemons at various level and CP (combat power - the higher the better) appear to be captured which is quite fun to do.

Once I return to the UK, I will use my stardust and candies to power up and evolve my strongest pokemons (effectively double or more the current CP) and enter them into Gyms to compete against the other two teams.  Each person chooses one team to belong to.  You can join the strongest team in your area or choose a different team (red/blue/yellow) to overcome the existing gym owner.  I will update this thread once I have returned to the UK and see what the situation is at the UK gyms.

Quick update since yesterday. Today I was at home and after using two incenses (free, 30 minutes increased chance of Pokemon appearing), I was able to level up to 9 which gave me a lucky egg (double XP) which I activated immediately for 30 minutes.  I evolved all the rattata and Pigeots each for 1000 XP (500 X 2) I could and the end result is I managed to reach level 12 which opens up the great ball - increased probability of catching a rare Pokemon which should work very well in combination with the berries.

Now that I am level 12, the pigeotto can be powered up to around 400 CP and then evolved further to get to around 800 CP but I need to catch 15 or so pigeots to obtain the necessary candies first.  This game is becoming more fun by the minute Smile. (And all free by the way)

Have you battled at a gym yet?

Thanks Chengaleng.  Do you play ? What cool monsters have you found/evolved so far and where please ?

I haven't joined a team or fought in a gym yet. Just got back to the UK on Sunday and now at level 19. Can level up my Pokemon 3 more times at least to get to around 1000 CP.   The gym next to my house keeps changing colour. I want to choose a team that can hold a gym for 21h to gain the meagre 10 poke coins !  I have been going out around my place and nearby towns in search for eevee and other rare monsters.

Currently still free although sorely tempted to pay ~£4 to upgrade the bag storage from 350 to 450 items. Keep having to throw away potions.

Oh wow thumb up  you got some pretty cool ones there! I have an Eevee, not very powerful though - only 222CP. A Lapras appeared at my house but it got away

I'm yet to try the gym... Interested to see what it's like but my Pokemons are too weak in comparison to the local gym holders!

Shame about Lapras Chengaleng. I found my monster CP goes up significantly as my level rises.  I use a lucky egg and evolve pidgy and rattata to earn loAds of XP.  I will be trying out the gym this week  and will give feedbacks.

Hi Robbie,

Sorry about the strange terms. Pokemon go is quite a simple game.  You wander around and catch different types of Pokemons. The CP (combat power) generally increases as you level up (I am currently at level 20). It takes a bit of skill to throw the poke balls (or great ball, or ultra balls which give higher success rates) to catch the Pokemon.

Each Pokemon you catch you earn 100 stardust and 3 candies of the Pokemon type you caught. You use both to power up that specific type of Pokemon. When you have enough candies, you can evolve the Pokemon to double its CP.

For example
Pidgey ====> Pigeotto (12 candies) ====> Pigeot (50 candies)

I can power up my Pigeot CP 3-4 times further as my level has risen 4 times using stardust and Pidgy candies.

This game is really fun in that it forces you to wander around town in search for rare pokemons (higher CP).

Once you reach level 5, you can join one of three colour teams (red (valor), blue (mystic), yellow (instinct)) and battle for supremacy in a gym. If your Pokemon can hold a gym for 21h, you can collect 500 stardust and 10 poke coins which you can use to buy useful items and bag upgrade (increase storage capacity).  Any Question Smile ?

Here is a very good walk through, definitely worth a read just to enjoy the journey as if you were there.  I picked up a lot of good tips from reading this guide.

Pokemon Go Tier List

Pokemon go catching locations - include all pictures showing evolutions

One of the fun aspect is the socialising. Yesterday, we roamed along the beach in search of magikarps to evolve into Gyrados (12th most powerful Pokemon). We saw many others out Pokemon hunting so i asked where they found them (nearby lake and along promenade). They shared information willingly. We are planning city tours (eg. Brighton, London) in search of new and rarer pokemons.  This is going to be fun.

How to find enough Poke Balls
---------------
One main issue non city folks (like me) will find is the shortage of poke balls to catch Pokemon with. Possible Solutions are :

1. Search for sets of poke stops in your town and wander back and forth between them. They recharge every 5 mins or so
2. Stay in a restaurant or public place like library which is situated right next to poke stops. On Monday we were having dinner where our table intersected with 3 poke stops that had lures in them so we were collecting poke balls and capturing pokemons non stop as we were dining out !
3. One nifty solution I discovered was to go on a bus in Paris where I was able to sightsee and collect poke balls and catch pokemons in the comfort of the bus
4. Also I have been driving my car slowly around town hatching eggs, discovering new sights and places whilst my wife collected poke balls and caught pokemons. True teamwork at its best !  We discovered the spice island last night. One surprise was when I stopped the car for my wife to catch a dratini (2nd most powerful Pokemon with two evolutions), a woman (spice girl?) stepped out of the shadow ...., so I quickly made a getaway !

I forgot to mention that hatching 10km eggs when you are at a high level is one of the fastest way to obtain a powerful high CP Pokemon.

Good comment. I notice it is quite addictive ! I am having to exert energy to avoid becoming too addicted / thinking too much about it Smile ! It is quite a good excuse to go out. I need to be very careful with this game. May need to bin it like other games soon to avoid over addiction lol

Good man. I hear there are already financial hooks to buy bait to attract critters, and businesses keen to pay  to attract players onto their premises.  Cherchez la femme!
