I reckon Murray got what he deserved.  He was warned about the damage his blog could cause yet chose to ignore it.

During today's meeting of The General Assembly Of The Church of Scotland, the Rev George Whyte, chaplain-in-ordinary and principal clerk of the Church of Scotland, read out a letter from the Queen.

In the letter, she spoke of "new bonds" that have been "forged in times of emergency" that "will serve us all well in the future as the United Kingdom seeks to rebuild and reshape community life".

Is HM trying to promote unionism?  Also I've no idea what 'new bonds' she's referring to, but they certainly aren't political ones.

Probably won't get much attention though. Press seem much more concerned with an interview from 25 years ago!

That's very true!

I see the royals have been visiting in Scotland and Gordon Brown was seen at Holyrood Palace visiting. I think William and Kate have been sent to wave the Union Jack in Scotland.

William has been saying how he loved going to St Andrew's university also that he loves to visit Balmoral for his summer holidays. All very well but does he really think being in Scotland for a few hours is really going to influence how Scottish people will vote.

I also think most Scots will take it for what it is a publicity stunt to try and win back support for the union which many of us no longer have any faith in.

I think it is going to take a lot more than royalty coming to visit to change people's minds about remaining in a union
that is no longer fit for purpose. The only union I am interested in is the EU which hopefully Scotland will rejoin.

Mmm, why then do you support a political party that wants the English monarchy to reign over an independent Scotland?

LB - Prince William's week long visit to Scotland along with his wife HAD NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH PROMOTING THE UNION!  He was in Scotland because in March he was appointed by the Queen as the Lord High Commissioner of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

As the Lord High Commissioner, William will act for the Sovereign and maintain the relationship between the State and the Church  This role includes making an opening and closing address to the General Assembly, observing the debates over the week and carrying out engagements on behalf of the Church and its charitable work.

Throughout the week, William will report on the proceedings to The Queen and keep her informed of developments.

Also a Lord High Commissioner has been appointed since the 16th century - before the Union of the Crowns and the Parliamentary Union - so get that utterly ridiculous idea out of your head! Rolling Eyes

PS - I know what I said in my post of 22 May, but that was a reference to a letter from the Queen to the General Assembly, and not Prince William's visit.  Also if you bothered to read the news he had a meeting with Nicola Sturgeon as well as Gordon Brown.

Sorry but I do not agree with you. He may have been up to go to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland but don't kid yourself that political matters were not discussed.

Why did Gordon Brown go to see them in Holyrood Palace? I am sure they discussed other matters apart from the religious matters of the Church of Scotland.

So please do not expect me to agree with you. You have your opinions I have mine all you have to do is look at the present UK government led by a man who apparently can't differentiate between TRUTH and FICTION.

Why do you support the pro-Monarchy SNP then?

So what if they were - and he met Sturgeon as well - this was not the prime reason for him coming to Scotland, which is what you were maintaining.

@ Althusser and Aileen Gordon Brown is no longer in any political party in Scotland therefore he should not have any political influence in Scotland. Why was he invited to see Willian and Kate at Holyrood Palace? It is just another of his schemes to be involved in politics.

The royal family should steer clear of any political involvement there has already been talk of the queen being involved in the last general election she should remain impartial and not get involved. It is for the people to decide how to vote. She made remarks about Scots wanting to be independent that is for the people of Scotland to decide not the royal family.

If Gordon Brown wants to get in Politics again then he should stand in the next General Election that's for him to decide otherwise he should not be involved in political decisions made in Scotland.

There could be a number of reasons why they visited, particularly as they've been on friendly terms for years.

What fairy tales have you been reading because I can find no evidence of this whatsoever?  While it's true that Johnson asked her to prorogue parliament for five weeks at the end of August 2019, an unprecedented situation, the Queen really had no alternative but to agree to it, but this had nothing to do with the election which was held in December.

That really is unspeakably daft nonsense LB, as Aileen has patiently explained.

And I notice you keep avoiding the question of why you support a party that wants the monarchy to reign over an independent Scotland.

"SNP's Deputy First Minister denies finances secrecy scandal after treasurer resigns"

"Douglas Chapman has claimed he was not given enough information to do the job and so 'resigned with immediate effect'"

And now Johanna Cherry too has resigned from the SNP's National Executive Committee for the same reason.
