Scottish politics

The Scottish Parliament is dysfunctional have a good look at Westminister nowhere could be more dysfunctional than there. It is time it acted like a modern parliament. Instead, it carries on as though it is still in the middle ages. Like the voting procedure. Everyone tripping out to vote.

It is long past the time when it starts to modernise and voted electronically. But no they still carry on with totally outdated methods in carrying out the business of the country. Perhaps your countrymen and women could take a lesson from the Scottish Parliament.

Baubles like electronic voting systems aren't very interesting. It's the mechanics that matter, and the Westminster system has some interesting things going for it. It's not without fault of course (FPTP as an obvious example), but then nothing is.

Also, what's this about "countrymen"? The Westminster government coverts the whole of the UK. Nationalists. Give me strength. doh

Will, they also be pilloried in the same manner.

Yes.

Unlike nationalist simpletons, I don't take criticism of the government or state bodies as a personal attack to be defended at all costs.

@ boogers, we have a two-house parliament in Westminister already with a top-heavy house of lords which costs a fortune. The PM floods the House of Lords with his cronies like Ruth Davidson being one costing a fortune. A good place to have a nap and get paid for it.

You forget boogers that the members of the Scottish Parliament are elected by the people. The House of Lords are placed there by the PM and I would think at present there will be a big tory majority.

Good try but until the House of Lords are put there by election it is obviously going to be flooded by Tory members.

The House of Lords costs ~£100 million a year. This is small change.

There are currently 242 Tory Lords. There are 530 other Lords.

There's a good case to be made that the HoL is too large, but it's certainly not stuffed with Tories.

The Scottish Parliament is unicameral legislature, and as such should be compared to the House of Commons.

Most people agree that a bicameral legislature has significant advantages over a unicameral legislature, and there's strong debate over whether a directly elected second chamber is better or worse than other mechanisms. The House of Lords actually does pretty good work when it comes down to the important thing: scrutinising legislation.

SQA is to reinstate teacher awarded grades.

A level results in England are something of a mess, so this will put pressure on ministers in England to do the same, but their current approach seems to be putting pressure on universities to lower the grades required for entry rather than rectify the issue at source so to speak.

I don't think the SQA had any alternative really, but it must be a huge relief to the many thousands of pupils who had their marks unfairly downgraded.

As for England, is it too much to hope that ministers will now reconsider their approach in the light of this decision because it seems ridiculous that the onus should lie with the universities?

It looks like the pupils in England who don't have the grades will have to resit their exams because they have no right to appeal.

So they are actually in a worse position than students in Scotland. So they will have to resit their exams if they want the grades for university.

Reinstating teacher assessed grades is incredibly stupid to be frank, but Swinney and Sturgeon got themselves into such a mess there was no other way of climbing down.

Interestingly, if the same climbdown was attempted in England it'd possibly be subject to judicial review, as it's palpably unfair and in contravention of published best practice.

What a shambles.

Nope, the school can appeal the adjusted results - which is good, as it means the onus isn't on parents, and will be done when there's a genuine chance of getting the adjusted grade overturned.

A quote from Boris Johnson."People don't see Scotland but a British institution" what the hell does that mean it doesn't make sense. That is from our idiot of a PM. Boris Johnson slammed for his bizarre comments as the PM makes visit to a school in Upminister.

Another quote -PM: Scotland is seen as a 'British institution' Please tell me what he means has he been hitting the bottle or something stronger.

This is supposed to be the man who is PM of the UK he hasn't got a clue.

Here's a tip: read the article, not just the sodding headline in that disgusting Tartan Pravda rag.

Full quote:

Quote
"The Union of the United Kingdom, for me it's the greatest political partnership the world has ever seen.

"And I think what people in this country often don't appreciate is the way in which the UK is seen abroad.

"They don't see us as England or Wales or Scotland or Northern Ireland, what they see is great British institutions.

So no points scored there Althusser. Good try though.

Just wondered which of your excuses for Sturgeon you now feel most embarrassed by
A) 'patsy'
B) 'all the SQAs fault'
C) 'too busy with COVID'?

Smile

Why?  After all the teachers are the best people to know the abilities of their pupils, not a bunch of anonymous moderators.

As for Swinney - https://www.thenational.scot/news/18643750.msps-vote-debate-motion-no-confidence-john-swinney/

Quite the opposite: what this episode demonstrates is that teacher led assessment is a terribly bad solution. Teachers are human, and as such are subject to bias and incentives. Case in point here: moderation was needed because teacher assessments massively over-inflated grades.
