The nice men in white coats (or rather a white van) are coming to take my laptop away at some point tomorrow to fix its heating problems, so I don't know how much I'll be on here before it comes back in the new year! My Mum has the exact same problem as you Laura... the fan is on full blast pretty much constantly which is very loud. It's a really high spec laptop as well, it's HP btw.
