Emperor Federer and the naked truth

Quote

This is so true! have been waiting for someone else to say this for years!

I think a lot of people who actually know tennis agree. That's why I wrote it.

Great article GC.   I honestly can't see how even Fed fans could see this as biased - after all you are only quoting the great man himself.  Now, if only one of the popular rags would publish it in its entirety!

Yes, all I did was put together all the guy's quotes all in one place. If it were any other player saying these things, he'd be denounced as a sore loser. Federer seems to feel he's earned the right, in some way, to talk like this.

Federer is an embarrassment - his pre- and post-match comments beggar belief and are tv/internet gold, you just cannot believe a human-being with his god-given talent can be so ignorant, arrogant and rude.  Still, all the time the media luvvies continue to turn a blind eye to his graceless arrogance and go on treating him as Mr Wonderful, he will doubtless go on getting away with it.

Surely it is only a matter of time before someone breaks ranks within the world of tennis and spills the beans.  The problem is that he reigns supreme with the global public as a result of the hype generated by the brown-nosed journalists/comms who drop at his feet and appear to be overwhelmed by his supreme 'greatness'.  Those of us who are onto him are disgusted at the way he escapes scrutiny and enjoys diplomatic immunity.  His tennis is phenomenal but he is no gentleman, and certainly not a good sport.

Because Fed did a more grievous tournament withdrawal in 2011.  Halle is Fed's favorite pre-Wimby event so much that in 2010 (or earlier), Fed signed a contract with Halle for continued commitment so they must have jacked up his appearance fee.   That year, he lost to Hewitt in the finals.  That's fine because Fed was still in the finals guaranteeing tickets etc.  In 2011, after losing to Rafa in RG in a 4-setter, Fed withdrew from Halle which surely lost a ton of money.   Andy had an injury reason for Basel but Fed was not injured - not physically.   Did he think twice about the Halle director's beyond-headache disappointment?

Fed pulled out of Halle because of groin strain - which is why it was perhaps a bit rich when he seemed to criticise Andy for pulling out of Basel for much the same reason.

Roger Federer has withdrawn from a Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Halle, Germany to rest his sore groin.

The world number three, who lost to Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open on Sunday, pulled out of the Gerry Weber Open grasscourt event on Monday.

"After talking with my team this morning, I feel that it is too big a risk to take a chance and aggravate it before Wimbledon," said Federer.

Wimbledon, which the Swiss player has won six times, starts on 20 June.

Federer added of his decision to withdraw from the event in Germany: "I am very disappointed as it's one of my absolute favourite tournaments on the ATP Tour, but my body, especially my groin, really needs a rest."

The 29-year-old has won at Halle five times but his late withdrawal has angered organisers.

"I am stunned," said tournament director Ralf Weber said. "Our plans for the past year have been nearly exclusively with Roger appearing.

"He never gave us any doubts that he had health problems. I clearly expressed my disappointment to his management."

The tournament director had a private jet and a maid service lined up for him as well apparently!

I enjoyed the article Nigel, and while some may say quotes are taken out of context or are poor translations, the clothes speak for themselves - that "gold topped milk" outfit was unbelievable!

It amazes me how Fed fans seem to come out of the woodwork. Perhaps he has employed fans to go and suss out any tennis site and jump to his defence. After all Nigel you were only quoting Fed's words, that is what he said and we take note. Glad you are taking out the bit about Mandela it is not necessary. Having said that it was a really well written piece.

Great artical, I am so glad he is now being seen as the arrogant man that I  have always thought he was, he never says anything nice about any of his opponents particularly Andy Murray who is well on his way to cuffing him good and proper in the not too distant future.

You comments are apt but remember, tennis is a combat sport. One to one like boxing, see Ali... You need to psyche your opponents to come with the goods. Any great sport person that loses thinks they can play better next time until retirement beckons. Fed being nominated as a respectable gentle man is genuine, he puts his cards on the table. The point of being the greatest is debatable. Good info tho...

Interesting to see who you're attracting to comment, grabcopy..Wink
Do people read every site on the net in order to pounce on any negativity about TMF? Should get out more I think.
In fairness BBH, I've read two posts so far which praise Nigel outright for his article.  Not all guests are "baddies"! Smile

I shall amend those bits. They do detract.
Good man.  The way things stood your earlier comments were provoking a controversy of their own.

If what Fed says is his honest opinion, then should it surprise anyone that so many people don't have any respect for him? I admire him as the great player he was, and to some extent still is, but it's such a shame that his comments don't match his tennis.  Even if he does praise a player, that praise is often either turned negatively on its head or is at best a back-handed compliment.

Read and loved your article.  Your comments about RF are sooo true.  I really find him the most smug and self obbsessed 'sportsman' of all time.

Wonderful piece of forensic journalism Nigel - loved it.  Thought I'd missed something when I read the comments re Mandela but see you had the sense to edit that bit out - good!

While I'm no fan of Stan the Man, I think it is outrageous that smugfed said that about him - and aren't they supposed to be friends?  What little I saw of the tie, seemed to me that smugfed was playing pretty dismally indeed I recall one of the comms said he was floundering - and fed and floundering are not two words that comms often put together.
And v interesting how this piece had encouraged so many non-members to comment - on both sides of the argument.

I'm not sure how forensic it was. I just cobbled together a load of quotes. Fed hung himself by his own petard.

If you go onto Google News and type in 'Federer', you'll see why we're getting so much traffic.

Well your choice of quotes and incidents added up to a pretty forensic demolition job in my view - accept the compliment Nigel! w00t
