I'm not so sure - Fed's got such a good record against Delpo and can mix up the pace against him which Delpo finds hard to deal with. Would love Delpo to win though as he's one of my favourites.
I was trying to be positive, because Delpo is one of my favourites too and I really do want him to win!
By the way, if anyone wants to read some positive stuff about Federer, provided they can find it amongst all the pics posted by a Murray/Federer fan, here's a link to a thread which I opened in Sept 2010 -

Federer disagrees with the shortening of the season, and he has stated his reasons for it( bad for lower ranked players and, the tournaments that are axed lose money they've invested in the sport.)
But - what about the question of fewer mandatory tournaments? Federer is exempt, and I think Nadal too because of 600 matches played, (and Fed also being 30+), so they can get lots of praise for planning their schedule carefully - while Djoko & Murray can't.
Aileen - I'm still a newbie really and I found that thread earlier today, but also another .."I'm starting to dislike Federer..." started Jan 2009

We had a power cut when Davy was a set and a break up against Fed - really hoped that he would have finished the job off by the time the power came back on - sadly it was not to be. Not to worry - hopefully Delpo will do the job tomorrow.

Delpo will beat Fed tomorrow if he plays the way he did today against Berdych.
Also Delpo had a very short match, so who is going to be the fresher player? Davy ran him ragged. It was a great match to watch, especially the 3rd set.
That's tough one - but Federer fought his way through two tough matches, Del P lost only 5 games in 2 matches. Who knows who will be better prepared. That's the beauty of tennis really - only when the last point is played, will we know who the winner is.

By Sir Panda, I believe. I only became a member in January 2010, but I seem to recall posting on it, until I thought "Is Federer really that bad?" which is why I opened the other thread.

lWhat you missed, therefore, was seeing Davy calling for the trainer for brief treatment for a knee problem half-way through that set. It didn't seem to affect his movement, but he was definitely wincing a bit from time to time. It was after that that his frustrations began to boil over. Made Andy seem like a novice in the muttering stakes! I really thought when Davy lost the second that that was it, and that Fed would romp home, but he just kept coming back and coming back in the 3rd. A highly entertaining set that with some great tennis from both players, but if Davy has picked up an injury, it might be just as well he didn't make the final. These things have a nasty habit of feeling much worse the next day, and Delpo would definitely take advantage of it. Federer may regard himself as being very fit, but the fact remains that he had a long 3 setter, and that with less time than Delpo to recover - not that Delpo has much to recover from - as the final starts at around 1 pm GMT. I was also surprised to see that it took Fed so long to turn the match around. It seemed to me that Davy was dictating play for the 1st set and a half, and Fed was dancing to his tune. A bit strange from a man who claims he's going to be No.1 again!

Thanks Aileen - seems I missed the best of it then. I'm not convinced about Fed's form - after last weekend's showing and his relatively easy ride this week, I think he will need to improve a lot to make any impression on the better players. It will be interesting to see how he does against Delpo today - it should give us an idea as to where they both are.

I think you need a certain amount of arrogance (stemming from unswerving self-belief) to be a multi time champion but Fed takes to a whole new level. I have no time and no respect for the man. Don't think it matters who you follow in tennis to see that if he carries on in this manner he is only going to end up discrediting himself. Enjoyed your article very much, someone needed to say it so well done to you!

Thanks, Victoria. There's a lot of criticism of lack of balance here. I had no interest in balance. I could have said that Federer's a great player (true) and that he does fine work through his foundation (probably true), but that's not what the article was about. Call it a polemic, if you will.

Don't know if you managed to watch the match, but I found it very disappointing from Delpo's point of view. Constant failure to convert BPs, lack of aggression particularly in first set, could have come into middle of court more often - and Fed caught him out in this in the 1st with beautifully disguised drop-shots. Also his usual lack of speed round the court (maybe due to his height?). If Delpo really wants to get back into the top five, he's going to have to do a lot better in order to beat these players.
Thought Fed played very well though but it was interesing to see him apparently having a little dialogue with himself - saying "Allez" after good shots and groaning after playing bad ones. That's not like the Fed of old.
Nice to hear him in his speech congratulating Delpo's performance and saying he hoped to meet him at the WTF, without sounding condescending, before indulging in his usual post-match verbal diahorrhea. His media interview though could be another matter!

I wonder if Delpo was nervous today? It's his biggest final to date since he's come back from injury, and I know he admitted to being nervous earlier this week during the Llodra match. If he was, it could explain some of his misses today - he definitely wasn't playing the consistent baseline tennis he displayed over the last few days.
Fed, to his credit though, played a great match and didn't let Delpo get any rhythm on his groundstrokes. He played a much better match than he did yesterday (where he should have lost really).

Of course it is, but what I said was that he managed to do it without being condescending about it, and that's an improvement. Don't know if you saw the match, but by the end of it Fed was definitely not wanting it to go to a third set. He was beginning to look vulnerable and started to rush things a little. A third could have been interesting.

I think Delpo probably was nervous, which was a shame because a win here would really have boosted his confidence.

The top players all say that his groundstrokes fall apart when the match becomes tight. His five-set record isn't the best. Nadal says the only thing that keeps Federer together in a final set is his serve.

I did watch the match Aileen and thought that Delpo looked very vulnerable. I think since he won the US Open the top guys have moved on and Delpo's movement will certainly hold him back against them. Whether he can improve that or not is questionable.
I thought Fed stepped up his game today and definitely played better than he has all week but he wasn't brilliant and if Delpo had managed to take the second set Fed may well have fallen apart in third - he was certainly relieved it didn't go the distance.
