Three kings and a prince

Quote

Everyone seems to be assuming Andy is nailed on to play Karlovic, Anderson, Raonic etc. It very rarely pans out that way. These players are pretty limited and I wouldn't be surprised if they are all knocked out by the 2nd round.
I see you are a clairvoyant BigNose. Pretty accurate!

Yeah I have, but I can hardly write a column on Murraysworld saying that Raonic is gonna dump out Andy in the 4th, can I?

It wasn't so much for Murraysworld but just that Raonic is still simply not good enough to even make the 4th round at Wimbledon. To put him down for a win would have been more like falling into the hype a bit too quickly and not ever knowing what exactly hit you.

And the King has also lost his crown.

Yo BigNose, when you say "everyone" I hope you are not counting me too. I specifically remember saying that others will have to make the round 4 as well. Having said that, I do want to see the early exit of the following players asap:

1. Nadal
2. Federer
3. Raonic
4. Ferrer
5. Del Potro
6. Berdych

A couple of them unlikely but then again you never know. The uncertainty factor or the wildcard may just kick in at some point of the tournament.

There was only one guy left in that list and he was the one who took out our Andy. How depressing.

Reflecting back on certain things, one must feel a lot for Benneteau and Andy. Benneteau played so well to the point that Federer really had to wait on him to finally fizzle out in the fifth. I really thought Federer got enormously lucky in the 4th set TB against Benneteau and then again, in the final against Andy in the 2nd.

Andy was definitely the best player in this whole tournament given the tough draw and the overall pressure on him etc. That’s a lot to deal with.

I wonder what would have happened if Benneteau had put Federer out.  With Nadal out and Djokovic ill ...

Djokovic, in that case, would have made the final and that's still a tough final. Federer was tougher as I mentioned to Mark before, because Federer is very good at exploiting Andy's main weaknesses and also, he's very keen playing a very aggressive game when he smells blood, so not to give Andy any time to regroup or think and that's exactly what he was doing in the 3rd and 4th set. Because once the roof was closed, he started serving very well and almost all his games were very short since then on and Andy found himself serving again very quickly and each time there was a lot of pressure on Andy's serve. Nole wouldn't have been able to serve this well as he's not as great a server as Federer so that would have allowed Andy to not only keep Nole in the rally but also, because of those rallies, Andy would have had more time to regroup. The key to Federer win was his serve in the 3rd and 4th set and he was able to do it once there was no wind (roof being closed). It's a very tragic loss if you think about it especially because of the rain delay. Never wanted Federer in the final to be honest.

So yes, I think Andy had a better chance against Nole and mind you, Nole is kinder. Who knows with this joker, really.

If Djokovic has flu, which I understand he has, how do you think he would have performed in the final?  Not all that brilliantly I think.  Anyway, I can't imagine Andy getting much satisfaction from beating an unwell opponent in order to achieve his ambitions.

Hard to tell. If Nole had made the final, even with the flu, he probably would have been keen on going the extra mile as this would have been the final match he would have played, so who knows. Maybe Andy would have pulled it off. I don't know, really.

I have yet to see the full match point by point because there were times, when things got too tight, I ended up switching to Scoreboard for a bit. Right now, I am still not there yet mentally to watch it again, but once I do, I feel I will get to see what went wrong where. Federer was coming in a lot a lot but that mostly happen after the rain delay, so I guess that was Paul's suggestions during the break. I have no idea what Lendl's suggestions were but couldn't be any massive tactical change because the rain delay happened when Andy was still playing very well and Andy didn't seem to come up with any plan B.

A Murray/Djoko final is what I was hoping for; their matches are almost always close and well contested, including some classics, like Cincy 08, last year in Rome, and this year at the AO. It would have been nice, too, because I would have been happy for either one of them winning.  Alas, maybe next time.

Not only next time but many times. Anyway, I don't mind Federer as long as Andy beats the crap out of him like he did in Shanghai and Toronto in 2010. lol

Oh I know Nole would have tried his best, but if he has full-blown flu as opposed to a flu-like illness, he really would have been struggling.

I could be wrong, but I've a feeling Andy said he never spoke to Lendl during that break.  However, given the fact that they all knew that play under the roof was a strong possibility, it does seem strange that no plan B was in place, although maybe there was but Andy simply couldn't execute it because he couldn't adapt to the change quickly enough.

Another thing I thought of was perhaps the rain delay made him think a bit much to the point that he got slightly tight once returned? The roof clearly made much bigger impact on their respective games. Federer must have thought he was the better player on indoors (and he is - being 5 years older than Andy and with all the experience in the world) and together with Paul's suggestions to come in more and the fact that, they were 1 set all by that time, I am sure it all worked out in Federer's favour. How ironic, really, when you think about RG final and that too worked out in Nadal's favour. That happened just when Nole was getting in the zone. How unfortunate, really for both players. Given all this, what can we possibly look forward to come USO? That too was washed out just last year and Andy had to play a few very important matches in a row.

I dont think anyone who knows Fed would argue that the roof closing put him at an advantage .  Such a bad twist of fate for Andy  Frown

The roof coming on was bad luck but it seemed like the match had started to tilt in Fed's favour before that point anyway, with those two drop volley points at the end of the second set which saw Fed break and take the set. Such a shame it happened like that as Andy had more chances in the second set. At the end of the second set, you could feel a surge in Fed's confidence. And when they came back from the rain delay, Andy definitely didn't look as self-assured as when they walked out at the beginning of the match.
