I had an appointment and was already in my jacket but had to delay my departure due to the lifescore of the first set. Really tight when you only have numbers. Thanks to everybody on MW who filled them with life. After that first set I left with little worry as I could not believe Karlo to win two sets in a row. There is no doubt about this GS obsession. I mean we as fans had high hopes and our temperature was rising with every major event and every match. How must Andy then have lived with this unbearable external and internal pressure?! And that his performance in other tournaments suffered from it was obvious to all of us. We will have a holiday tomorrow and with the day becoming rather sunny I'm going on a day trip. So it is actually perfect without a live coverage. And with the rain coming in on Thursday I can make myself comfortable in front of a monitor.

I tried to build my week around Andy's matches only to find out he is not playing on Monday. Ok, then Tuesday, but to my disappointment I had to realize my tennistv broadcast only starts on Thursday, which means missing the first matches. And I was so looking forward to seeing Andy vs. Monfils. Will it be worth getting up at 7am to follow livescores? Doubtful. Indeed, I also had the same difficulty in identifying Berdych if they had not indicated his name. So let's see how everything turns out without us/me watching. I clearly remember last year's final. I was under xtreme time pressure as my train was about to leave at around ten. Then Andy first on the losing track against Nadal to suddenly dismantle him in a rush. I could not believe my eyes. I left the house after the last ball in the best of mood. Hope this is going to repeat against any other guy and me with plenty of time to even watch the victory ceremony.

Now, after a few days, it's nice to look back. The USO had nearly everything for Andy: routine first round matches, lessons to ambitious youngsters, fight against or with the natural forces, nerves of steel in three tiebreaks in one match, rise from the ashes, beating one of his bogeymen who had beaten Fed before (very satisfying) to eventually reach the final. And Nole? He seemed to have sailed through. But as one of you said: consistency in a tournament does not really count when it comes to the final match. And again there was everything in it which we rollercoaster riders have experienced for so long with a happy ending this time. If there had not been all these years of waiting, all these tough losses in GS finals, all these doubts, all these attempts to go one step further, Andy's USO success would not have been perceived worldwide as the result of a long journey. He would not have felt the same relief and disbelief and of course neither would we as fans have. I think this victory is not comparable to Del Potro's or Nole's maiden slams (although I do not want to diminish their achievements then). SO Kevin Spacey's tweet definitely speaks from the bottom of my heart.

For the first time I realize what obligations such a success brings along: photo shooting in the streets of NYC, numerous invitations to sports programmes, interviews etc. But I like seeing Andy in civilist clothes for a change instead of jogging trousers and sports shirts. Yet, I'm quite aware of the fact that even the polo (and maybe the cardigan) are sponsored by adidas (thank you for kindly supporting German economy, not too be taken seriously).

After only three hours of sleep, which I sacrified gladly, I now came back from work and am very keen on checking the echo on MW and in other media. The interviews show many facets of Andy. Interesting to see how much public support he receives these days. this fact really reflects his growing popularity, although we of course have known about his potential as a player and his rather naturally shy demeanour in front of media representatives. I always liked his personality and am extremely happy he could prove to the world that he is no choker at all but battled back when things went wrong. this was the key last night.

These marvellous pics of triumph, some full of joy, others full of quiet satisfaction, make me smile all over my face. Thanks for posting them.
